10 Chilling Movie Moments in Snow that Will Totally Heat You Up

When it comes to snow in movies, there’s been some amazing moments of action and suspense. From crazy fathers to martial arts masters to secrets agents on the run, snow has been part of many great movie moments. Here are ten that should heat you up.

10aThe Shining (1980)

The Movie: Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson), his wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and their young son Danny (Danny Lloyd) spend the winter as caretakers of the Overlook Hotel only to discover that the place is haunted by a spirit that turns Jack violent and causes the already psychically gifted boy to see horrific images of the past and future.

The Snow Moment: While the film takes place during winter, the action is mostly contained to the hotel until the end when Jack, now fully possessed and on a rampage to kill his family, has trapped his son in the elaborate hedge maze on the hotel property. As the slightly crippled Jack chases after the boy with an axe, his clever son manages to elude him, backtracking over his own footsteps in the snow to confuse his father and leave him lost in the labyrinth where he freezes to death in the snow. Here’s Johnny!

9aThe Gold Rush (1925)

The Movie: The Lone Prospector (Chaplin) heads to the wilds of the Klondike for riches but finds much more in the arms of a beautiful woman.

The Snow Moment: While seeking refuge from a blizzard, the Prospector comes upon an old cabin in the tundra, but once inside finds renegade Black Larsen (Tom Murray) and a house that isn’t quite so stable. A classic old time piece of stunt work.

8aInception (2010)

The Movie: Dom Cobb (Leonardo DeCaprio) is a professional thief, but not the typical kind. He steals secrets from people’s minds but now he’s got a job to put one into someone’s mind.

The Snow Moment: The subject is Robert Fisher (Cillian Murphy), who Cobb and his team plan to insert an idea. The dream process is three layers deep, and in the third layer, the team have to infiltrate a heavily guarded fortress in the mountains. Fighting off hordes of security personal on skis and snowmobiles, the crew zip through the trees and off ledges, engaged in gunfire and antics that are just like a scene from a Bond movie. And speaking of Bond . . .

7aaThe Spy Who Loved Me (1977)

The Movie: The tenth 007 movie sees James Bond (Roger Moore) getting a little help from a sexy KGB agent (Barbara Bach) while investigating the hijacking of nuclear submarines.

The Snow Moment: Bond is no stranger to snow and skiing and here we have perhaps the most famous winter moment in the Bond franchise as James, decked out in a bright yellow one-piece, dons a red backpack and hits the slopes, dodging gunfire and henchman as they give chase. Skiing backwards and doing a flip off a jump, Bond eventually heads straight for a massive sky high cliff, going right off the edge. Good thing that pack has a parachute inside. Well done, Bond. James Bond.

6aBetter Off Dead (1985)

The Movie: Lane Meyers (John Cusack) gets terribly depressed when his perky girlfriend Beth (Amanda Wyss) dumps him but catches the eye of the French exchange student Monique Junot (Diane Franklin).

The Snow Moment: Roy Stalin (Aaron Dozier), the local handsome and arrogant athletic snob insults Monique prompting Lane to challenge Roy to a race down K-12, the most dangerous slope on the mountain, a run Roy has done but Lane has not. The winner will be the captain of the ski team. Chaos ensues.

5aFargo (1996)

The Movie: Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy) is a desperate man with a terrible scheme to have his wife kidnapped but inept criminal and a meddling police force make his every move a nightmare.

The Snow Moment: Police Chief Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand), a persistent cop with a flare for investigation, tracks down the killers to a rustic cabin by the lake, where she catches Gaear Grimsrud (Peter Stormare) disposing of his partner Carl Showalter (Steve Buscemi) in a wood chipper. It’s a snowbound moment of gruesome fun. You gotta have a breakfast.

5aTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)

The Movie: Four mutated turtles raised by a martial arts master rat while living in the sewers take on the Foot Clan who are looking to take over New York City.

The Snow Moment: In an extended scene where the Foot Clan give chase along the side of huge mountain, the Turtles, April O’Neil (Megan Fox) and Vernon Fenwick (Will Arnett) are in a tractor trailer with Humvees on their tail. But that’s not all, avalanches and cliffs make the action all the more insane in this epic, ridiculous snow moment. Cowabunga!

4aStar Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

The Movie: As the Rebels are overrun by the Empire, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) travels to Degobah to seek a Jedi master named Yoda to train him. Meanwhile Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) and C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) run the blockade of Imperial Star Destroyers in the Millennium Falcon to help in the cause.

The Snow Moment: On the ice planet Hoth, after the Empire has discovered the location of the secret Rebel Base, they send ground forces to attack the shield generators. The site of At-AT walkers on the horizon still brings chills as they commence their assault. It’s a classic battle in the snow, led by Luke Skywalker for the Rebels. The Force is strong in this one.

3aKill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)

The Movie: The Bride wakes from a coma after her former lover Bill shoots her on her wedding day, then she goes on a rampage of revenge, taking out Bill’s gang one-by-one (with a little help in the end from a specially made, hand crafted Hattori Hanzo Sword).

The Snow Moment: One member of Bill’s Deadly Viper Assassination Squad is named O-Ren Ishii (Lucy Liu) and has her elite Crazy 88 fighters swarm The Bride at the House of Blue Leaves restaurant. When The Bride defeats them all, she faces O-Ren one-on-one in the back garden. All while it snows. That woman deserves her revenge.

Die Hard 2 (1990)

The Movie: John McClane is back in action, this time at Dulles International Airport fighting off a group of terrorists who are using the airport to rescue a drug lord from authorities. Worse, his wife is in a plane circling overhead, targeted by the bad guys.

The Snow Moment: McClane tracks the mercenaries to a small church that they are using as a hideout and ends up in a snowmobile chase in the middle of the night with loaded machine guns that he discovers aren’t quite as loaded as he thinks. The action zooms around on fields of powder and even frozen lakes making this a wild ride that is one of the film’s highlights. Yippee kay yay!

1aJackie Chan’s First Strike (1996)

The Movie: In the fourth installment of the Police Story, Insp. Chan Ka Kui (Jackie Chan) works with Interpol to track down a terrorist arms dealer but ends up involved with Russian intelligence that sees him part of a sting operation.

The Snow Moment: After finding a briefcase that has evidence which proves a man named Jackson Tsui (Jackson Liu), a Chinese American nuclear scientist with CIA links might have connection to a stolen nuclear warhead, he is chased by unknown henchmen on snowmobiles and riding in helicopters across fields, mountains and cliffs where he ends up in a lake. It’s classic Jackie Chan with perfect timing, outrageous stunts and glorious action. Plus he’s wearing a polar bear hat.
