LOVE ACTUALLY

Duh. Obviously, right? This staple of the genre is a sort of right of passage for any couple, the 2003 Richard Curtis-directed ensemble film a highly-influential movie that is considered one of the greatest romance movies ever made. It tells of ten different stories of people in and out of love in the weeks before Christmas, most of them interconnected in some way, from the Prime Minister of England (Hugh Grant) to the recently widowed Daniel (Liam Neeson) and many in-between. A huge cast and lots of swings between laughs and tears, this is a sure bet if you’re looking for a reliable night of movie romance. We know you’ve seen it. And we know you secretly love it. Enjoy.[/nextpage][nextpage title=”NEXT” ]

Can’t Buy Me Love

This classic 1987 romantic comedy pretty much put future TV doctor heartthrob Patrick Dempsey on the radar. Starring opposite the late Amanda Peterson, this adorable little teen romp is a guilty pleasure for most, following nerdy Ronald Miller (Dempsey), who spends his summer vacation mowing lawns to buy a telescope (cuz you know, science is for geeks) until he makes a deal with cheerleader Cindy (Peterson) to help him get cool. A reverse take on the ugly duckling tale, everyone learns their lessons with light conflicts and a path to love. Fun, beezy, romantic, and a sure-fire way to kick off a night of bliss. [/nextpage][nextpage title=”NEXT” ]

A CASE OF YOU

This little seen 2013 romantic comedy from director Kat Coiro stars Justin Long (who co-wrote the script) as Sam, a New York City writer in a funk, suffering a bit of writer’s block, even as he makes a living novelizing teen blockbusters. He’s all wrapped in a girl named Birdie (Evan Rachel Wood), a street artist and coffee shop girl who doesn’t quite know he even exists. Using her Facebook page, he makes a scheme to ingratiate himself into her life, adopting her interests and staged meetings, but sometimes the thing you wish for most can be the very thing that scares you away. Touching and funny with two great lead performances, this is a very satisfying little gem, prefect for date night.[/nextpage][nextpage title=”NEXT” ]

THE CLIMB

Let’s mix things up with a multi-language Netflix original. This romance is a bit of action and adventure as well from director Ludovic Bernard, following the efforts of Samy Diakhate (Ahmed Sylla) to win the girl of his dream, Nadia (Alice Belaïdi). Thinking he needs to impress her and her family, he sets out to reach the summit of Mt. Everest, the peak a physical and metaphorical destination to prove his worth. Along the way, he becomes a media sensation as he breaks down barriers and learns much about himself along the way. Touching, funny, emotional and rich with great cross cultural romance, this is an unusual title on the list but one well worth exploring. [/nextpage][nextpage title=”NEXT” ]

1 MILE TO YOU

While it looks like a sports movie on the surface, it’s anything but in this Leif Tilden-directed romantic drama. Kevin (Graham Rogers) is a running phenom, whose prowess is catching attention from some very important people, but most especially his coach (Billy Crudup), who tries to shield him and encourage his spirit of the sport. Problem is, Kevin lost his girlfriend in a devastating accident, and only running allows him to remain ‘connected’ with her, chasing her memory, causing him to run faster and faster. Meanwhile, Henny (Liana Liberato), a girl curious as to what motivates him, draws near, determined to learn more about this quiet, talented boy. Another touching, emotional romance, this is a wonderful little film with a terrific performance by Crudup.[/nextpage][nextpage title=”NEXT” ]

HITCH

Let’s lighten things up a bit with this 2005 romcom from director Andy Tennant starring Will Smith and Kevin James. It tells of a ‘date doctor’ named Alex (Smith) who helps men to find love and build long-term relationships. His latest client is the hapless Albert (James) who crushes on the beautiful Allegra (Amber Valletta), a celebrity who seems well out of his league. Meanwhile, Alex finds himself smitten with Sara (Eva Mendes), a popular gossip columnist who is trying to uncover the identity of the famously reclusive date doctor everyone is talking about. Naturally, everything that Alex has taught men doesn’t work with Sara and he’s got to make a whole new plan to win her over. Genuinely funny with plenty of good laughs and romance from the whole cast, this is a harmless but satisfying flick that is just right for a couple’s night out.[/nextpage][nextpage title=”NEXT” ]

EAGLE vs SHARK

There’s no getting around this. Eagle vs Shark is weird, but in a wonderfully offbeat and totally great way. From director Taika Waititi, it tells the curious tale of Lily (Loren Horsely) a quirky wallflower working at a fast food restaurant. She’s got a thing for Jarrod (Jemaine Clement) an eccentric fellow working at a video game store, who has his own crush on Lily’s co-employee Jenny (Chelsie Preston Crayford), who really wants nothing to do with him. When opportunity strikes at a ‘dress as your favorite animal’ party, the eagle and the shark meet and from there, learn they’ve got a lot in common. Using clay animation, weird visuals, and plenty of awkward encounters, this is not your typical romance, but boy is it ever fun and in many ways, right on the nose. Granted, this takes a certain kind of fan to enjoy, but you know who you are. Cuddle up and let this one work its magic.[/nextpage][nextpage title=”NEXT” ]

MIDNIGHT IN PARIS

Owen Wilson might not be the first guy on your list for leading men in a romcom, but goodness does he deliver here, in this Woody Allen-directed fantasy that is pure joy to watch. Owen is Gil, a successful but disillusioned screenwriter who wants more from his writing, unable to get his first novel done. He travels to Paris with his fiancée (Rachel McAdams) and finds himself transported back to the 1920s, where he keeps company with his literary and art heroes, but also the intoxicating Adriana (Marion Cotillard), the two sharing an immediate attraction. Able to to travel between the two timelines, Gil is faced with juggling the burdens of his regular life and the wonder of the past, though each soon present larger hurdles and he learns that sometimes love and passion are not so far away as he thought. A must see.[/nextpage][nextpage title=”PREVIOUS” ]

SLEEPING WITH OTHER PEOPLE

I know what you’re thinking. Why would a film called Sleeping With Other People be a good recommendation for a Valentine’s Day movie night, but make no mistake, this is a great little romance. Directed by Leslye Headland, it stars Jason Sudeikis as Jake, who, while at college, through a funny set of circumstances, loses his virginity to Lainey (Alison Brie), also a virgin. It’s a one night thing and we skip ahead years later where the two meet again in, of all places, a sex-addicts therapy meeting and they soon becomes platonic friends, something that really isn’t fooling anyone, including their friends and even the people they try to date. Funny, of course, it’s also really dramatic with a few moments that truly surprise. Sure, it’s an unusual romcom, but if you’re looking for something left of center, this is it. Happy Valentine’s Day.[/nextpage]
