‘A Bigger Splash’ Official Trailer Sneak Peek

A Bigger Splash sees a famous couple taking a retreat on a small Italian island when their idyllic getaway is cut short by the arrival of an old friend and his daughter that stirs old haunts, new passions and trouble for them all.

Tilda Swinton plays Marianne Lane, a glittery rock star who is in a relationship with Paul De Smedt (Matthias Shoenaerts), a well-known filmmaker. On a secluded vacation spot, they are joined by Henry Hawkes (Ralph Fiennes) and his daughter Penelope Lanier (Dakota Johnson), he a music producer with some obvious influence on Lane and she, a daughter who until recently, he never knew he had. She is young, nubile, and inviting.

Directed by Luca Guadagnino, who has worked with Swinton a few times previously, most notably 2009’s I Am Love, sets a claustrophobic setting on the island as the four collide into each other’s lives. Clearly tempted by Penelope, Paul is a troubled documentarian who is bitterly jealous of Henry and his past relationship with Lane. Lane, who is recovering from a surgery that may end her vocal career, is swept up in the memories of more glorious days.

Johnson, who to this point is most famously known for her performance in 50 Shades of Grey, is again a target of sexual desire, but this time seems more in control of that, and in fact, an instigator. She spends most of the trailer in a bikini. Fiennes looks to be going off the deep end (in a good way) as a man uninhibited by any constraints, clearly carved from an earlier time, trying to be relevant now. The clip teases that something very bad is coming, and certainly it must. Police are involved and there are moments of frantic build up to what is surely a deadly situation. The clip has a great old European film feel to it, like a 60s revival of classic romantic thrillers.

The film performed well in its international release and will may it’s debut in the US in May.
