Red Candle Games is a new independent game development company based in Taiwan. Their first game is currently in Steam Greenlight called Detention. Set in 1960s Taiwan, under martial law at a high school situated in a mountainous area called Greenwood High School, Detention features a main character who wakes up in an empty classroom as a typhoon starts approaching. Shortly after, he meets a girl who also awoke in class, and now they are too late to escape. Together, they end up trapped in their ominous school filled with “spine-chilling mysteries”. Classic, side-scrolling horror gameplay awaits.
Detention is described as:
“…Players navigate the main characters in a classic point and click fashion to explore a high school where evil encroaches. While hiding from the rampaging monsters, you are to find items to interact with in the otherworldly rooms. And as more mysteries unveiled, the dark past of a cursed school will finally surface.”
Detention is a 2D survival horror point and click side-scroller with a haunting atmosphere. Its story unfolds in local Taiwanese cultural references and links to Taoism, Buddhism and Chinese mythology. That is a rare use in many horror games and is what makes this game unique. The graphics and visuals of the games are appealing with an original style. However, it is the soundtrack that will be a big feature. Composed by Wei Fan Chang, a ten-year contributor who has written for many different games, television and movies, the soundtracks will merge electronic, rock and lo-fi musical elements with traditional Asian instruments.
