Emily is Away Too (2017) Game Review

Follow-up is an even better experience.

Emily is Away Too is the sequel to 2015’s free to play PC game by Kyle Seeley which features a different Emily while using the same online messenger choice-based visual novel style.

Emily Is Away Too is about a messaging experience through various years of school as we start differently with Evelyn and shortly Emily reaches out to us also. Over the chapters, you choose how to build the relationships with these two girls. Just remember that every choice, whether it may seem big or small, may and probably will have an impact on your ending. The first game, Emily is Away was a free to play experience. The sequel retains much of the same experience however creates more depth. Not only are there two characters to talk with, the world expands outside of the messaging screen. While you can choose your profile at the beginning of each chapter, in conversation, there will be links of music videos to listen to and files transferred to look at. All this adds to the experience and in many ways, adds to the immersiveness.

For those familiar with the first game, you will no doubt remember the nostalgia of online conversations but also the heart pounding and heart wrenching experience of trying to capture Emily’s affection. Emily is Away too doesn’t stray far from that formula as it ticks all the boxes of anxiously pursuing a girl. In fact, the tension is moved up even more as the visual novel takes a pivotal turn on chapter 3 that forces us to make a decision. There are four possible endings and many secret icons to unlock which will appeal to those enjoying the game to go back and play over and over again.

Overall, Emily is Away Too is a good follow-up to the 2015 interactive visual novel indie hit. It expands on the formula. It creates more than one NPC, allows more profile personalization and still lets our every decision impact which ending we may get. Using the nostalgia of an old messaging service and mixing it with a newer medium of a spinoff of Facebook and Youtube music videos, while simple also proves to be effective in immersing further into the story and making us truly feel attached to this story.
