‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ Drops First Explosive Trailer

Godzilla: King of the Monsters is a 2018 film and next chapter in  the cinematic MonsterVerse: an epic action adventure that pits Godzilla against some of the most popular monsters in pop culture history.

Following the global success of 2014’s Godzilla reboot, the giant radioactive lizard is returning to the big screen next year in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. This time around, it looks like Godzilla is going to be in for an epic war against his nemesis, King Ghidorah. Also joining the fight will be fellow monsters and Godzilla regulars, Mothra and Rodan, although it’s up in the air whose side they’ll be on. Here are a few takeaways from the first trailer:

  • The world is on the brink of mass extinction, and Dr. Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga) believes that the only to save it is to release the Titans
  • The search for these Titans includes finding Godzilla underwater, Mothra in what looks like a giant waterfall, Rodan in a volcano, and King Ghidorah who is frozen
  • Russell’s ex-husband, Mark (Kyle Chandler), is at odds with her belief, yelling that she’s out of her mind, so she may be shaping up as an antagonist of the film
  • We see the world in complete ruin, tornadoes everywhere, the sky is red, and the monsters and military are all in battle (hard to tell who against who)

I really enjoyed the majority of this trailer. Throughout most of it there is a peaceful and tranquil melody being played on piano, which is unique because it’s in complete contradiction to the subject matter at hand. The world is evidently coming to an end that has been caused by humans, and it’s up to these Titans to restore the balance. Of course releasing the monsters should result in full blown mayhem, most likely because King Ghidorah doesn’t play well with others. The last third of the trailer is a bit all over the place so it’s hard to tell exactly what is going on, but the fact that it’s chock full of action and rampage is always a good sign. The most enjoyable part of the trailer is seeing the team of humans travel to each of the monsters to release them, and I imagine that should be one of the highlights of the film. Expect this to be one of the major blockbusters of 2019.
