Tonight’s movie is about the end of the world; it’s about survival and doing what it takes in a post apocalyptic world where there are terrifying creatures hunting you down. Sound like a good Friday night to you? It sounds like a good Friday night to me.

Hidden tells the story of parents Ray (Alexander Skarsgård) and Claire (Andrea Riseborough) as they do everything they can to raise their daughter, Zoe (Emily Alyn Lind), in an underground shelter after the outbreak of a deadly virus nearly a year before. They’ve tried to make life as normal as possible for Zoe and assuage her fears of “The Breathers” who live on the surface and are constantly hunting for them. There is so much tension in this film. You’ll find yourself on the edge of your seat throughout and the plot keeps one step ahead of you the whole time. This sic-fi thriller brings something new to the genre, which is desperately needed in a genre that constantly falls back on the same old tropes.

One of the greatest aspects of this film is the relationships. The cast here is so well chosen. Skarsgård is a really convincing father and the way he prioritizes his daughter and tries to make sure she is emotionally taken care of is so endearing. Riseborough also delivers an impressive performance and is the perfect contrast to Skarsgård’s character. The script really allows these actors to showcase their talents. As a young actor, Emily Alyn Lind shows a lot of maturity here and has some moments of real depth. Overall, there are some really great performances here that aren’t to be missed. In the interest of honesty, this movie does have it’s flaws. It is very dark and there are moments where it’s really difficult to see what it going on. In that same vein, during some of the more action intense scenes, the cinematography and the editing is a little muddled and it’s slightly confusing at times. There are also a couple moments that are slightly implausible. Why didn’t they just grab the pull string?! You’ll know what I mean when you see the scene. All that being said, this really is a great indie gem. There are usually slight flaws with any movie and this one is no exception but the pros more than outweigh them. All in all, directors Matt and Ross Duffer have created a truly intriguing film filled with tension, suspense and really honest characters. It’s a great Friday night flick and you don’t want to miss it. Give it a watch and let us know what you think in the comments!
