On Netflix Now: We’re Watching ‘Carol’

CAROL IS A 2015 DRAMA ABOUT AN YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHER WHO DEVELOPS AN INTIMATE RELATIONSHIP WITH AN OLDER WOMAN IN 1950S NEW YORK.

All you need to do is look at the names at the top of the cast list and you pretty much have all you need to know to say yes to this supremely well-acted film. Both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara are more than worth the price of admission in this emotional drama that sees an aspiring photographer named Therese (Mara) becoming involved and entangled with the wealthy suburban housewife Carol (Blanchett), leading to great devotion and then greater heartache. Director Todd Haynes tells a deeply connective and beautiful tragedy that is lush and sumptuous while giving his leads a telling stage to create a highly memorable relationship that lingers with you well after it’s over. THE LAST WORD

An actor’s movie, this is a genuinely touching story with Blanchett and Mara giving two electrifying performances. These fearless actors committed to a story that will surely move you.

If you’re not a fan of the slow burn, this might seem like it takes a while to get started, and a rather quick ending could leave you unsatisfied, however these are minor issues.
