On Netflix Now: We’re Watching ‘Lost in Space’

Lost in Space is a 1998 sci-fi adventure movie about a family going into space to fight for a chance for humanity but are soon fighting to live long enough to find a way home.

Based on the mid 1960s television show of the same name, this big screen adaptation follows the Robinson family, selected by the United Global Space Force, to find a new home for the people of Earth after the effects of global warming pollution render the planet nearly uninhabitable, yet when their mission is sabotaged, they must fight to survive. With an all star cast ensemble, including William HurtGary Oldman, and Heather Graham, the movie is a visual effects heavy action film that did well at the box office (ending Titanic‘s massive run at number one) but not so much with critics. While it’s not a meaty movie, it’s still loads of fun and kinda nostalgic for fans of 90s thrillers.

THE LAST WORD

A great cast and a solid devotion to updating the source material, this is a good looking film with plenty of ambition and cool sci-fi action.

Mostly skipping the cheesy fun of the television series, this lacks a bit of the humor most might hope for, never quite sure tonally what it wants to be.
