On Netflix Now: We’re Watching ‘Shimmer Lake’
SHIMMER LAKE IS A 2017 CRIME DRAMA ABOUT A SMALL TOWN BANK HEIST GONE WRONG AND THE SHERIFF WHO TRIES TO SOLVE THE MYSTERY BEHIND IT.
A lot of movies try to mess with your head. They do this with format, visuals, characters, whatever, but one of the best way is with time. With director Oren Uziel‘s clever and often highly-engaging Shimmer Lake, that’s just what happens, flipping the timeline in reverse, building back to the start, sort of à la Christopher Nolan‘s Memento though still very different. It follows the investigation of three men, Ed (Wyatt Russell), Andy (Rainn Wilson), and Chris (Mark Rendall) suspected of robbing the local small town bank and the sheriff (Benjamin Walker) on their trail. This is a real thinker and fun to try and figure out with the reverse narrative, all layered over a smart story. Read our full review.
THE LAST WORD
Working backwards is a wicked cool way to tell the story and along with some great performances and a clever story, this is a fun night at the movies.
Some might not go for star Benjamin Walker’s rather stoic approach and at least one thread feel unresolved, and if you’re no fan of deciphering movies, this will be a hurdle.
