Nintendo Direct E3 2018: Trailers and Impressions

The Electronic Entertainment Expo 2018 is the 24th Electronic Entertainment Expo, during which hardware manufacturers, software developers, and publishers from the video game industry

Like the past few years, Nintendo has opted to do a video conference called Nintendo Direct at E3, which showcases their upcoming titles and other games in the works, following that up with gameplay and such for their Nintendo Treehouse event over the week of E3. With some big titles out of the gate, we could only speculate that Metroid Prime 4 would make an appearance, following the teaser trailer from last year, or perhaps a more in-depth look at the Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle DLC with Donkey Kong announced at the Ubisoft conference. So what did we get?

Daemon X Machina

Cell shaded games really can be an effective style to use for your game, just look at Borderlands, but boy does this mech brawler look ugly. Sure you can blast all the metal you want while bombarding us with explosions and action, but really it just left us cold.

Still, if you like what you see it will be available in 2019.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna – The Golden Country

September 2018

Pokemon – Let’s Go Pikachu! / Pokemon – Let’s Go Evee!

This is easily one of those games where you just marvel at the creativity at Nintendo as they give players an experience inspired by Pokemon Yellow as well as one that will enable players to add a new level to their Pokemon Go adventures. Players will be able to transfer their Pokemon into the game (but not the other way round). At the same time, the Poke ball plus controller, which will be released separately, is both a great collector item, but also perfectly fits with the gameplay.

These games will release on November 16.

Super Mario Party

Another big title that Nintendo fans have been begging for and one that certainly plays well into the party game market that Nintendo has been growing for the Switch since its release, what we see from the trailer makes us pretty excited. The gameplay map can be changed by combining Switch screens, which is something we weren’t expecting and only makes us all the more impressed by what the Switch is capable of. Should be great brawler fun.

Super Mario Party launches on October 5, 2018

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Spring 2019

Fortnite

It really was only a matter of time before it got a release on the Switch, especially after proving such an unstoppable success with its colourful world and unique gameplay which enables you to construct structures on the fly. It’s also a lot easier to pick up and play than its competition, making it perfect for the Nintendo crowd. Fortnite is available now.

Octopath Traveler

Octopath Traveler is a Square Enix Nintendo Switch exclusive where you play as one of eight characters. There will be a downloadable demo available at eNintendo Shop on June 14th. The save data from the demo will transfer to the full game once purchased.

OctoPath Traveler will release on July 13, 2018.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate

Certainly one of the most hyped releases of E3 this is the title which the Nintendo fans have been waiting for and boasting another impressive roster of Nintendo favourites as well as 8 player battles. Here’s who’s confirmed:

Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus, Kirby, Bowser, Fox, Falco, Marth, Zelda, Sheik, Villager, Meta Knight, Mewtwo, Sonic, Peach, Pikachu, Ice Climbers, Inkling, Captain Falcon, Zero Suit Samus, Wii Fit Trainer, Squirtle, Ivysaur, Charizard, Pokemon Trainer, Ness, Lucas, Ryu, Ganondorf, Ike, Cloud, Snake, Jigglypuff, Pichu, Roy, Olimar, Diddy Kong, Lucario, Lucina, Robin, Bayonetta, Mr Game & Watch, Greninja, Dr. Mario, Duck Hunt, R.O.B., Pit, Dark Pit, Palutena, Corrin, Bowser Jr., Toon Link, Young Link, King Dedede, Rosalina & Luma, Mii Gunner, Mii Swordfighter, Mii, Brawler, Wario, Little Mac, Pac-man, Shulk, Wolf, Mega Man, Yoshi, Luigi

Thankfully, this is one of the few titles from the conference without a massive wait and while the gameplay might not have exactly changed since the previous games, if it ain’t broke why fix it? Releasing in time for Christmas on December 7, 2018, expect this to top many a holiday wishlists.

Independent Games

It’s great to see the Switch working with Independent developers as well as adding retro titles to their back catalogue and this trio of titles work perfectly with the Switch whether you’re on the go or playing at home.

Another phoned-in experience from Nintendo, which has become the norm for them, though at least this year we have a few titles to be a little excited about yet nothing that caught us by surprise.
