On Netflix Now: ‘City of God’

City of God is a 2002 drama about two boys who grow up in a violent neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, taking very different paths.

Back in 2002, this foreign language film was all the talk, becoming one of the most acclaimed movies of time and topping numerous best of lists. Director Fernando Meirelles‘ gripping and jarringly authentic tale follows Rocket aka “Buscapé” (Alexandre Rodrigues), an idyllic and soulful young man with dreams of becoming a photographer. His brother is Marreco “Garganey” (Renato de Souza), a member of a local gang called Tender Trio. All around them is corruption, violence and death, though Rocket manages to keep clean of it, and Goose faces a much more tragic destiny. Meanwhile, Rocket falls for the lovely Angelica (Alice Braga) and struggles with life in the favela, as the gangland wars claim more and more lives. A devastating experience, this is a terrifying as it is beautiful, a deeply-moving journey that will stay with you for a long time after. Watch it tonight.
