On Netflix Now: ‘Revolutionary Road’

Revolutionary Road is a 2008 drama about a young couple living in a suburb during the mid-1950s who struggle to come to terms with their personal problems while trying to raise their two children.

Many flocked to Sam Mendes‘ stirring marital drama for one reason, the re-pairing of Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, the two finally working together again more than ten years after their phenomenal success with Titanic. The film follows that story of Frank Wheeler (DiCaprio) and April (Winslet) who meet at a party. The two are a perfect couple yet when they decide to follow the expected lifestyle and move to a comfortable Connecticut suburban street, they each give up their personal dreams and life sort of holds them to their home like an anchor. It only grows crushingly worse as the years pass and while on the exterior all looks well, on the inside, it’s nothing but corrosive. The suburban nightmare has long been a staple in movies and Mendes adds to the collection with a critically-favored effort though it is DiCaprio and Winslet who offer devastating performances as a couple in flames. Don’t miss it.

THE LAST WORD

It all comes down to the leads, with an emotional and raw set of performances that make this heartbreaker one to watch.

It can be a hard watch, the caustic relationship unrelenting and so authentic, it’s painful to see these people live as they do.
