Ed Helms and Jeremy Renner in the New ‘Tag’ Trailer

Tag is a 2018 comedy about a small group of former classmates who organize an elaborate, annual game of tag that requires some to travel all over the country.

Here comes the true story about a group of lifelong friends that are engaged in a never-ending game of tag. What might be even more surprising than the premise is the list of A-list talent that is attached to the film, including stars such as Jeremy Renner, Ed Helms, Annabelle Wallis, Leslie Bibb, Isla Fisher, Jake Johnson, Hannibal Buress, Jon Hamm and Rashida Jones. That is WILD. Here is what we learn in the trailer.

The trailer begins with Jerry (Renner) and Susan (Bibb) getting married, and in the midst of the ceremony Hoagie (Helms) runs down the aisle in attempt to ‘tag’ Jerry. Hoagie then explains that their group of friends plays tag once a year in May, a tradition that has spanned 30 years. The trailer also makes sure to point out that this is true story, and they are not kidding. Jerry is the best tag player in the group (we then see some of his moves of evasion) and he wants to retire, so this is the year that his friends plan to tag him. The trailer also includes some funny shenanigans and gags along the way as the gang pursues or evades one another. Beyond all of this, though, we come to learn that this game has kept this group of friends together, and given them a reason to stay in each others’ lives.

At a glance, the concept of this movie comes off as pretty thin on plot, and one that will probably rely heavily on its use of humor. Based on the trailer, that would be okay with me. The trailer is relatively PG/PG-13, but I think it’s safe to say that this one is going to be pretty raunchy. Asides from that, this movie has top tier talent that could also aid in carrying a weak plot. However, after watching the trailer, I do think that there is going to be more to this movie than meets the eye. The trailer ends with us learning that the game of tag keeps these friends in touch as they get older, and gives them something to look forward to every year. I think that’s something that everyone can relate to as life goes on. Between careers and families it’s not always easy to stay in touch, and having a reason to, even if it’s a game of tag, is a theme that most people can appreciate. One look at the cast list on IMDb and the fact that it’s probably a raunchy comedy had me excited, but this one might go a little deeper than you would expect. I think that we might be in for another surprise comedy hit, similar to what Game Night offered us last month.
