Top 10 Indie Games at E3 2019

E3 2019 is now behind us. It’s now time to take a look at all the independent titles that we’ve seen during the conference. While not all the conferences included indie titles, a few of the showcases demonstrated and revealed more than enough games to consider in our Top 10. Here’s our countdown of the Top 10 Indies at E3 2019.

10. Telling Lies (Sam Barlow/Furious Bee Ltd)

Telling Lies is the spiritual successor of Her Story which takes the same concept but expands it. This FMV games focuses on four characters and piecing together their stories from various video footage to find out the truth behind a woman whole stole a NSA hard drive. With Sam Barlow at the helm again and a more known cast such as Logan Marshall-Green, it’s one that definitely seems to have a more complex idea using a similar concept from its predecessor hopefully retaining the great storytelling elements while giving even more depth.

9. Remnant: From the Ashes (Gunfire Games)

Remnant: From the Ashes is a third person survival action shooter that can have up to two other players join into the quest. One of the unique elements is its dynamically-generated worlds that will give a new experience with each playthrough. Adding replayability is always a great element especially when given 4 different realms to explore with different maps, monsters encounters and quests. Not to mention, its first trailer and gameplay has shown off a lot of cool looking monsters to go up against.

8. Griftlands (Klei Entertainment)

While Klei Entertainment is known mostly for open world survival adventures like Don’t Starve, Griftlands takes a step towards a new genre as it tackles a deck-building sci-fi role-playing game as its next upcoming game. It adds in the element of decisions having an impact on the playthrough from which friends to make and which jobs to take to which cards to collect.

7. Planet Zoo (Frontier Developments)

From the same company that brought Planet Coaster, Planet Zoo is a zoo building sim with the goal of building an educational and conservational modern zoo. Boasting some beautiful graphics, it also gives its players more flexibility in the functionality of the zoo itself and the interaction level of the animals living there.

6. My Friend Pedro (DeadToast Entertainment)

My Friend Pedro is a violent shooter with the main gameplay shown currently of a man looking to take down everyone in his path “at the behest of a sentient banana”. So far the gameplay is what is most captivating for this game which seems very fast-paced and relying heavily on reflexes while still showing some gameplay of physics-based puzzles and slow-motion sequences.

5. 12 Minutes (Luis Antonio)

Twelve Minutes set in top-down interactive thriller set in a time loop. Top-down games in this genre is not commonly seen especially in games which uses a time frame to change the development of a story. Telling the story of a romantic evening between a couple turned into the wife being accused of murder and the husband rewound back to 12 minutes before, the click and drag interface will give commands in real-time to see how it changes the scenario before it gets rewound again to solve the mystery. No doubt a unique blend of elements to look forward to.

4. Spiritfarer (Thunder Lotus Games)

Thunder Lotus Games also changes it style as it announces this next project which is far different from their previous games, Jotun and Sundered. Spiritfarer is a management exploration game where you play as Stella, a ferrymaster of the dead who builds its ship to explore, befriends spirits and then when it is time, releases them into their afterlife. What makes this game even better: co-op mode where you can play as Daffodil the cat.

3. Cris Tales (Dreams Uncorporated)

Cris Tales is a love letter to classic JRPGs set in a  story that doesn’t only focus on combat but uses a simultaneous past, present and future. Taking a look at the current debut demo, it gives off a stylistic and visually appealing game while fully voiced dialogue as well as retaining the classic RPG elements. Possibly one of the hidden gems to appear during E3 especially after trying out the debut demo currently available on Steam.

2. Midnight Ghost Hunt (Vaulted Sky Games)

A lot of multiplayer games are on the horizon. Midnight Ghost Run is one that has a flip side and gives both sides of the game a chance to be the predator as time becomes not only a limit but can change the balance of the game itself.

1. Ori and the Will of the Wisps (Moon Studios)

Ori and the Will of the Wisps is one that may top a lot of anticipated lists and looking at the roster of this year, it yet again remains the most well-rounded one. While it looks a lot like the same as the first one but a continuation of the story, why change what was already a great game regardless of its storytelling, its animation and creativity as well as the challenge.
