Five Reasons to Watch A Slice Of Life In Barcelona

A Slice of Life In Barcelona is a 2015 drama following the lives of dysfunctional couples and their interactions with each other.

For a debut independent film made with little to no money, A Slice of Life in Barcelona shows a lot of care and effort not just by director Maria Galindo but clearly everyone else involved with the project. Here are five reasons why you should watch:

1 Characters

The movie focuses on Paula (Anneke Necro) and her girlfriend who enjoy stealing from random people. Her homophobic brother Ramsey (Tony Corvillo) also loves ripping off others. There is also Christina (Jessica Hernandez) who becomes romantically involved with a former co worker Robert (Oscar Gomez) when her girlfriend Molly (Madalina Pirvan) is away visiting family. These are not the best people in the world but Galindo never once points a finger at them (except for Ramsey) and allows the audience to just come along for the ride.

2 The Acting

Much of cast in this feature make their on-screen debut. Gomez portrays Robert as a guy who at first is very likable, and we can see why Christina would fall for him. But as their relationship goes further he becomes a genuine jerk, yet portrayed organically. Necro, who is known solely for her work in adult cinema is terrific as Paula, a woman who feels like the world took something away from her and so strives to steal it back. The only members of the cast who have been in more than one movie are Hernandez and Corvilo, both highly convincing throughout. Naturally, a lot of their choices can be a bit despicable, but they are nonetheless endlessly watchable.

3 The Editing

Having a screenplay with multiple characters and diverging plots might not be all that easy simply because the audience needs to pay attention to it all in staying with the story. Galindo, who serves as director and editor of the film, balances all this well, giving equal time and focus on each person throughout. How do I know? Not once did I pick up my phone while watching it. That’s the modern barometer, I suppose.

4 The Director

Maria Galindo did just about everything. Not only is she the writer and director, she also handled cinematography, set decoration, sound, and as mentioned, editing. She took a big risk doing everything on her own, and for feature debut, proves she’s ready for more. Major studios ought to be knocking at her door soon. Keep your eye out for her again, but until then, put A Slice of Life in Barcelona on your list.

5 You can watch it for free

If you have an Amazon Prime account or have the Tubi app on your Roku, you can watch A Slice of Life In Barcelona for free on those networks and on Google Play and YouTube as well. Just make sure that you turn the captions on because the movie does feature language other than English and it doesn’t come with official subtitles.
