‘Admiral’ Trailer is Historical Drama on the High Seas
Epic sea battles and a bit of history make for a swash-buckling multi-language trailer about one man leading a fleet against an invading army.
This Dutch film, called Michiel de Ruyter, tells the story of a 17-century admiral who took command of the Dutch fleet when invaders from England, France, and Germany are feared to come as the Netherlands become incredibly wealthy from the East India Company. With sea battles the primary means of attack and defending borders in that region, one such confrontation leaves the Dutch without a commander and the government, now a republic after a lengthy war with Spain, appoints de Ruyter as the new admiral.
Directed by Roel Reiné, the mostly international cast does feature some familiar names for those in North America, with Charles Dance (Game of Thrones) and Rutger Hauer (Blade Runner)(who is Dutch) in the cast, though undoubtedly in minor supporting roles. The trailer features some spectacular visual effects and naval combat and by knee-jerk reaction reminds us of The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, but this is certainly far removed from that whimsical series. We’re on board!
‘Admiral’ opens in wide release in February.
