Monthly Movie Guide is a Monthly Series to keep you the moviegoer updated about upcoming in-theater big studio films in release.
Well summer blockbuster season feels like it’s officially over as August approaches. While July still had some movie franchise sequels to offer from Ant-Man and the Wasp to Mission: Impossible – Fallout, August is bringing to the table a classic cartoon, a disproportionately large shark, and some very foul-mouthed puppets.
Christopher Robin
August 3
Kicking off the month will be Christopher Robin, bringing to life the beloved bear who is obsessed with honey, Winnie the Pooh (Jim Cummings). Ewan McGregor plays a struggling, middle-aged Christopher Robin, who is in need of some cheering up from the old gang. This should be a fun one for the children, and will probably offer a few laughs for adults as well.
The Meg
August 10
Jason Statham is back on the big screen in his latest action junket about a team of marine researchers who are attempting to track and kill an unrealistically large, prehistoric shark. Hopefully this one doesn’t take itself seriously at all, and gives the audience a fun ride that is full of tongue-in-cheek humor.
BlacKkKlansman
August 10
Spike Lee directs this dark comedy and true story about an African American police officer who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan in the 1970’s. Lee looks to be blending a unique sense of humor with harsh realism to shed light on this story that deserves to be told. Look for strong reviews and possibly some Academy love here.
Mile 22
August 17
Mark Wahlberg and Peter Berg team up for their fourth collaboration about a team of American CIA agents in Indonesia that must protect a police officer with valuable information from local terrorists. This film looks to offer plenty of action and intensity, but little in the form of originality and substance.
The Happytime Murders
August 24
One of the more ridiculous movies of the year stars Melissa McCarthy as a detective tracking down a serial killer…in a world full of muppets. The red band trailer gave us an idea of the sex, drugs and vulgarity that will be in store, now it’s just a matter of seeing if director Brian Henson (son of puppet legend Jim Henson) has taken things too far.
Operation Finale
August 29
Ben Kinglsey and Oscar Isaac star in this real-life thriller about a team of secret agents that are brought in after WWII to track down the notorious architect behind the Holocaust, Adolf Eichmann. This one looks like it will be difficult to sit through at times and relive some of the horrors that were carried out by the Nazis, but again is a story that needs to be told. Don’t be surprised to see Kingsley garnish a supporting actor nod come Oscar season.
