December In-Theater Movie Guide: Trailers & More

Mortal Engines, 2018 © Media Rights Capital (MRC)
After a strong November that included hits such as The Grinch, Bohemian Rhapsody, Ralph Breaks the Internet and Creed II, December has a tall task ahead to keep pace. It’s fate will most likely hinge on a long awaited Disney sequel, a struggling superhero franchise, and a blockbuster spinoff. Steve Carell will be along for the ride with a couple of Oscars hopefuls, and a comedy duo will reteam to try and find their magic once again.

Once Upon a Deadpool

Dec 12

Ryan Reynolds is back in the edited, PG-13 version of Deadpool 2, with Fred Savage joining the cast this time around. So, if the Deadpool humor is too crude, or the violence too gory, this version of the film should be right up your alley.

Mortal Engines

Dec 14

The popular book series is being brought to life by Peter Jackson and his Lord of the Rings team. Hera Hilmar and Hugo Weaving star in this flick about giant cities that move around on wheels and battle one another.

The Mule

Dec 14

Clint Eastwood directs and stars in this picture about a 90-year-old horticulturist and WWII veteran that is caught transporting $3 million worth of cocaine through Michigan for a Mexican drug cartel. Along for the ride will be co-stars Bradley Cooper, Laurence Fishburne, and Andy Garcia. Hopefully Eastwood can recover from his other release this year, The 15:17 to Paris, that wound up being one of the biggest duds of 2018.

Mary Poppins Returns

Dec 19

The magical nanny is back, this time with Emily Blunt donning the umbrella as Ms. Poppins. Expect this one to open big as families of all ages travel to the theater to enjoy some nostalgia. Joining Blunt will be Dick Van Dyke (returning from the original), Meryl Streep, Angela Lansbury, and Colin Firth.

Aquaman

Dec 21

Here we have what could either be one of the biggest releases of the year, or one of the biggest disappointments of the year (based on how DC movies have fared lately). James Wan directs with Jason Momoa returning as Arthur Curry, and fortunately the movie is getting positive reviews so far. Could Momoa join Gal Gadot in helping get the DC Universe back on track?

Bumblebee

Dec 21

Finally the Transformers franchise is mixing things up a bit, offering a spin off that doesn’t have Michael Bay directing. Relative newcomer Travis Knight (who found success directing Kubo and the Two Strings) is at the helm here, leading a cast including Hailee Steinfeld and John Cena. The movie, quite obviously, focuses strictly on the transformer Bumblebee, as he finds refuge in a California junkyard and befriends Steinfeld.

Holmes and Watson

Dec 21

The dynamic comedy duo of Will Ferrell and John C Reilly are back to try and find their Step Brothers and Talladega Nights magic once more. Here they bring Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes back to the big screen, adding their personal brand of ridiculousness. Based on the trailers so far, they might’ve dumbed this one down just a bit too much for audiences to stand.

Welcome to Marwen

Dec 21

Steve Carell stars in this light hearted comedy/drama where a victim of a brutal attack who finds a unique and beautiful therapeutic outlet to help him through his recovery process. Robert Zemeckis is in the director’s seat here, possibly looking to delight audiences in the same manner he did 24 years ago with Forrest Gump.

Vice

Dec 21

Director Adam McKay reteams with his The Big Short star, Christian Bale, to tell the unbelievable true story behind former Vice President, Dick Cheney. An all-star cast joins the two, including the likes of Amy Adams, Steve Carell, Tyler Perry, and Sam Rockwell. Expect this one to make some noise at the Oscars, particularly in the acting categories.
