At Dreamhack Montreal 2018, the Loto Quebec Indie Game Zone is located at the center of all the action. With over 20 independent game studios based in the province of Quebec making an appearance with their games in development for the public to try out, it is a candy land for avid gamers of all ages to get a hands on experience and talk to the developers about their projects. The projects listed are in no particular order of preference but a general showcase on what was shown with our general impressions.
Aftercharge – Chainsawesome Games![]()
Aftercharge is a 3v3 competitive first person shooter. What makes it different is its asymmetrical style that gives both teams different objectives. On one side, the robot team has to destroy the six extractors while also having the ability to charge up each other’s energy whereas the other team as enforcers have the goal to eliminate the opposite team.
Zombiotik – Totema Studio
Zombiotik is a 2 to 8 player game with a top down view of little humans making upgradable barricades to run away from one member which is the zombie who needs to break down the barriers and turn all the humans into the walking dead. There is a lot to love with Zombiotik mostly because its so fast-paced and busy as it turns easily into a frantic mess of running away. It has a cuter skin which works for the younger audience and only one or two buttons to build and run away making it easy to pick up. The zombies are slightly tiny so with the colors sometimes being the only defining factor, there is a challenge of making things rather confusing when the game starts moving fast and everyone is running around (in panic). Its funny and a great time but there are still months to polish up little details before it will be released. Totema Studio has the expected release date in October 2018.
Playcraft – Bebop Games
Playcraft is an upcoming game currently in closed alpha. It is essentially a multiplayer sandbox game where you and your friends can create and build and discover games from the community.
Boyfriend Dungeon – Kitfox Games
Boyfriend Dungeon is an upcoming dungeon crawler dating sim game where it’s essentially dating your weapons. There are weapons to pick up that transform into humans that are dateable. They brought their early prototype to the show as they continue to promote the last few days of their Kickstarter campaign. Even in early prototype, there is such an enjoyable balance of the two genres that blend unexpectedly well together, capturing the best of both worlds. Kitfox Games is hoping to release in Summer 2019.
Legends of Ethernal – Lucid Dreams Studio
Legends of Ethernal is an upcoming narrative 2D action adventure game developed by Lucid Dreams Studio. It tells the story of a little boy going on an adventure in the world of Arkanys to find his parents after finding his home wrecked. It has puzzles and is expecting to be a seven to eight hour game experience upon release.
Bloodroots – Paper Cult
Bloodroots is an upcoming action game where you play as Mr. Wolf, a man betrayed and out for revenge. While Mr. Wolf can fight melee style with his fists, a lot if items in the world is also available for him to pick up and use from the seemingly innocent carrot to other sharp, pointy and dangerous objects lying around. Suffice to say, do not let its cartoonish appearance fool you. Bloodroots is a relentless action game packed with style especially with its cut scene for perfectly timed attacks and the blood streaks covering the floor as the defeated enemy flings across the ground.
Eden Rising: Supremacy – Nvizzio Creations Inc.
Eden Rising Supremacy is an open world action game that supports up to eight players cooperative mode. It is set in an alien planets where it combines tower defense and weapon crafting to fight against the aliens hordes on this planet. With a distinctive color palette, Eden Rising Supremacy has some cool items to pick up to make some unique weapons. Eden Rising Supremacy is currently available on Steam Early Access.
King of the Hat – Hyroglyphik Games![]()
Recently announced to be heading to Nintendo Switch and released on the Discord store, King of the Hat is a familiar title at the gaming events in Montreal (and beyond) as they grab a lot of recognition for being public and audience favorites. King of the Hat is an upcoming 2 to 4 multiplayer game both available online and local. It has the simple yet creative concept of jumping on the other players’ hats. Different characters also have their own features and the hats are both the life and the weapon and has to be used cleverly to come out the winner in this fast-paced and extremely fun game.
Flowing Lights – Denis Dufour
Flowing Lights is a puzzle game where you play as a little manta looking creature who has to navigate through different creatures spewing lethal lights. The different surrounding and light patterns will create the different challenges to solving each part of the level. The game is aiming to be out by early next year (if not earlier).
DiverCity – Novacode![]()
DiverCity is an online cooperative game adapted from a board game with the same name where you play as a scientist and with friend, you need to explore this newly discovered coral reef to prove to the government that it is worth saving.
NITE Team 4 – Alice & Smith![]()
NITE Team 4 is the upcoming military hacking game set in The Black Watchmen universe where all the different Alice and Smith games are set in. Much like this studio’s other games, it focuses on bringing this fictional world successfully into an alternate reality set in the current world and much like the authenticity of The Black Watchmen as an agent with its different tactics making it immersive, NITE Team 4 also brings in a game which is still in development that feels very real.
Save Your Nuts – Triple Scale Games
Save Your Nuts is an upcoming capture the flag multiplayer game where you play as little creatures with the help of power-ups scattered on the map to score the nuts into the goal just like you would in sports game. With that said, Triple Scale Games has built a physics-based game that moves very much like a match of soccer or hockey.
MageRift – Wrecko Studios
MageRift is a single player action mobile game that uses the touchscreen to create spell combats across hundreds of levels. The game has a builder where the community also shares their own levels for everyone to play in Discover mode. For the more traditional gamers, the Gauntlet mode will be for a more campaign oriented experience with a lot of levels to fight your way through.
Victus Vincimus Veterans Revenge (V3) -Natural Records Studios
Victus Vincimus – Veterans Revenge (V3) is an upcoming military action science fiction VR drama where you play three characters who are each depicting their emotional horrors of war.
