E3 2018 Top 10 Independent Game Reveals

With E3 behind us, a lot of Triple A titles were announced, but there were plenty of big and small gaming developers who also shared an array of independent titles.

Independent titles have made themselves a force to be reckoned with as they corner a market on creating games that either try to bring something new to the table or deliver a meaningful experience.

Here is our countdown of the Top 10 independent games presented at E3 2018!

10 Sable (Shedworks)

Sable is an upcoming 2019 coming of age open world desert adventure game. You play as young Sable who treks the desert on an alien planet to discover the people and culture while learning about her own place in the world. There will be quests to fulfill and secrets to uncover in this visually unique adventure.

9 Twin Mirror (Dontnod Entertainment)

With the recent release of Vampyr, there is no doubt that Dontnod Entertainment has no issues with dealing with darker material compared to their popular game, Life is Strange. This next venture will be published by Bandai Namco Entertainment and throws its players into a story-driven psychological thriller set in Basswood, West Virginia where your choices throughout the investigation will determine the main character’s fate. Twin Mirror is expected to release in 2019.

8 Session (Crea-ture Studios)

As everyone waits hopelessly for Skate 4 to become a reality, this Kickstarter funded project Session is an upcoming skateboard simulation game. Using dual stick controls and video editing and sharing functions, the gaming experience is to get the full virtual pro street skateboarder experience while sharing the successes (and failures).

7 Transference (SpectreVision & Ubisoft)

First announced in E3 2017, Transference is confirmed a debut video game project by Elijah Wood’s entertainment company, SpectreVision in collaboration with Ubisoft. This psychological thriller game dives into the minds of three members of a family using their brain data to piece through the mystery. This suspense combines both live action footage and environment storytelling for this first person exploration narrative experience and will playable both in VR and traditionally.

6 Overcooked! 2 (Ghost Town Games & Team17)

Nothing is more chaotic and fun than jumping back into this couch co-op up to 4 players in another adventure to the Onion Kingdom. Promising a variety of new recipes and maps on land, sea and air along with new characters, Overcooked! 2 is a game to look forward to to enjoy some more great and funny moments with friends. With a release date set on August 7th, it’s an adventure just right around the corner.

5 Tunic (Andrew Shouldice)

Tunic is a game that we like to call Fox Zelda at the Game Warp offices also made last year’s Top 10. Developed by solo developer Andrew Shouldice, it is now an Xbox exclusive title. You play as a fox fighting through this adventure RPG in a wonderfully stylish world. Honestly, there hasn’t been a whole lot of extensive coverage and this year’s trailer is still a lot of the same as last year’s but it is incredibly hard to not love a cutesy version of Zelda.

4 Unravel 2 (Coldwood Interactive)

Announced as an EA Originals surprise in the EA Play conference, the sequel of 2016 puzzle platformer featuring Yarny was announced. This time, it includes an optional co-op experience as Yarny loses his long yarn but merges with a friend. Co-op gaming experiences are all the rage these days and honestly, we’re a big fan of this direction. Two playable characters means more depth and more complexity in the puzzles plus another venture into Sweden inspired landscapes. The best news of all is that Unravel 2 is already available. You can find it on Playstation 4, Xbox One and Steam.

3 The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit (Dontnod Entertainment)

Dontnod Entertainment makes it a second time on this list with this adventure of a little boy full of childhood imagination. Set in the Life is Strange universe, The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit offers a world of wonder. While this is not the Life is Strange sequel, it gives us a glimpse and a hint of characters that will carry over to the sequel that is currently in development. In the meantime, this game will be released on June 26th and is completely free.

2 Ori and the Will of the Wisps (Moon Studios)

Moon Studios knocked it out of the park with its first game. With this sequel, Ori and the Will of the Wisps offers up some gameplay at this year’s conference as we dive back into this magical and very dangerous world. Ori is in for another adventure. From the trailer, there will be familiar faces as well new challenges and mechanics as well. Ori and the Blind Forest boasted an emotional story with Metroidvania RPG elements and so much adventure and challenges presented in an incredibly balanced way. From the looks of it, this sequel will deliver the same wonder.

1 Afterparty (Night School Studio)

Night School Studios next game, after the massive success of Oxenfree and a favorite for the Game Warp team, is Afterparty. While only quickly mentioned at the Xbox conference, Afterparty did get a new gameplay trailer for E3. How can you not love a game about drinking and partying your way out of hell? The color palette, art style and choice driven elements as well as the tone makes this game looks both unique and intriguing. It’s not everyday you can say that you are looking forward to facing the devil for a drinking match.
