E3 2017 is fast approaching and while we have had confirmation of some of the titles being unveiled at the show such as Farcry 5 and Microsoft’s Project Scorpio the conference has certainly had its share of surprises over the years such as the announcement for Shenmue 3 giving the conference the genuine feeling that anything could happen. So with that in mind, here are the Top 10 announcements we’d love to see happen.
10) Skies of Arcadia Remastered
Originally released for the Dreamcast where it was frustratingly like much of the console’s catalogue sadly overlooked only to gain slightly more of a response when it was re-released on Nintendo’s Gamecube. Since then it has gone on to gain something of a cult following with many RPG fans proclaiming it one of the best games of all times, which of course is all the justification that traders seemingly need to charge insane amounts for a used copy.
Since the game’s release we did see this world of sky pirates represented in Sonic Allstars Racing Transformed where it gave us some of the most memorable tracks of the game and with so much excitement surrounding the remaster of Final Fantasy VII and the numerous remakes for Kingdom Hearts why couldn’t we see this game being given the same treatment so that it finally can get the recognition it deserves.
9) Borderlands 3
Despite creating one of the most beloved sequels of all time with Borderlands 2, Gearbox have struggled to follow it up despite the game being followed by a prequel and even being given the Telltale Games treatment it has been relatively quiet on the Borderlands front. The company meanwhile has staggered from one misfire to the next with Battleborn being crushed by Blizzard’s Overwatch, so surely it’s time for the company to return to Pandora for another round of vault hunting. A tempting tech demo at GDC give us hope a new title is on the way.
8) GTA 5 – New Story Mode / Map expansion
Since the release of GTA V three years ago, the game has only continued to evolve, especially with its port to both the Xbox One and PS4, Rockstar Games have been keen to continue the evolution of their revolutionary GTA Online which despite having a problematic launch has only improved with each free DLC which has only helped them to grow the world from simple costume packs such as the Valentine’s Day and Beach Bums DLC’s through to the world changing Biker and Business DLC’s while no doubt ensuring a steady stream of micro-transactions for those impatient gamers eager to get their hands on the new toys.
While Rockstar currently seems to have no plans to end in the immediate future their additions to their online world, what we really would like to see finally happen is the promised new Story mode in the same way that GTA IV had The Lost and The Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony why have Rockstar been so reluctant to provide us the same for GTA V?
Unquestionably for those of us sick of being blown up constantly by hyperactive teens in tanks a new story mode would be certainly welcome, much like an expansion to the world which has also been hinted at in various leaks which seemed to suggest the ability to fly to different cities or is this a plan for GTA VI? Come on Rockstar give us a reason for us solo gamers to come back!
7) Shadow of the Tomb Raider
Since being rebooted in 2013 with a gritty new edge while being scripted by Rhianna Pratchett the games have had something of a renaissance as the games served as a prequel introducing us to a Lara Croft before she became the legendary treasure hunter and it’s been fantastic to see her evolve over the course of the two games.
Now of course we want to see where her adventures take her next, in particular the setting for the game having seen her battle through a mysterious island and the snow capped mountains were can we expect her next adventure to take her? At the same time as exciting as knowing the setting, getting to see what new skills she brings equally has us excited and will we ever get to see Lara battle a T-Rex again?
6) Metroid Returns
Once one of the key icons of the Nintendo roster, recent times have hardly been kind to Bounty hunter Samus Aran whose games have frequently fallen foul of Nintendo’s constant desire to try and reinvent the wheel with the control systems for both the Wii and WiiU. Now with the Nintendo Switch currently one of the hottest consoles on the market will this be the time for Nintendo to bring back an old favourite, especially with the current lack of Third Party developers for the console surely Samus could tempt a few more of the old school Nintendo crowd back to the console.
5) New Crash Bandicoot
With the remaster of the Crash Bandicoot Trilogy coming out on June 30, 2017, it feels like the fresh looking Crash can finally get a continuation. The fanbase is definitely there and everything should be in place as in a recent chat over at Playstation Underground while showing off three level of the remastered game, they have talked about the remaster having a new look and some new designs to give it its own style while still holding the heart of the originals. It does give us hope that all the stars are aligned for the announcement of a new Crash Bandicoot.
4) Overwatch or Scott Pilgrim Telltale Game
When we did our review of Batman: The Telltale Series, we looked at possible properties that would be awesome to have as a Telltale Game. A video game property has been lacking since the last they did was Minecraft. We’re tied on wanting either an Overwatch Telltale Game since it is a multiplayer first person shooter and the characters don’t exactly have a back story so it would be nice to have it as a Telltale Game to also support the comics available on Amazon Kindle.
However, if pairing up with Blizzard may be problematic, there’s always the option of getting the Scott Pilgrim world into Telltale Game and giving it the Telltale reboot. The movie did pretty well so there is no reason to doubt that Scott Pilgrim has a fanbase that will look forward to it.
3) Radiata Stories Remastered
There’s a remaster hype nowadays and an extremely underrated game is Radiata Stories that finds the perfect balance between being an RPG adventure as well as giving the story two different paths to take as well as injecting a perfect amount of humor, making each character really come to life in unexpected ways. With the rise of Final Fantasy and all sorts of Playstation 2 games getting that remaster love, there is no reason to deny this for Radiata Stories, especially as a Square Enix game, which is essentially the mark of RPG and story quality assurance.
2) Soulcalibur VI
Fighting games are making a return especially when online multiplayer is so convenient now. Soulcalibur has a fun backstory and a nice collection of colorful characters. We’ve seen Street Fighter V, Tekken 7, Injustice 2 and Mortal Kombat X all have a new addition to their franchises in the last two years. It is time for Soulcalibur to come back with a Soulcalibur VI that will take the fighting game genre by storm.
1) Until Dawn 2
Until Dawn was a great story-driven choice-based experience with a lot of genuine tense moments and cause and effects that made a difference. Plus, it had a great atmosphere. The devs built a great game and with their familiar voice cast. What we’d like to see in Until Dawn 2 but make it into an anthology style where it just makes an entirely different story.
