July is shaping up to be a big month for the major studios with some live action sequels and a return to the big screen of one of Hollywood’s most acclaimed directors. Here’s what you’ve got coming to your local cineplex in July.

Spider-Man: Far From Home

July 2

Following the culmination of The Avengers series, Marvel kicks off the next phase of its empire with Spider-Man (Tom Holland) in Far From Home. After “the snap” from one of the previous Avengers movies, there’s been a multi-verse earth created that fellow superhero Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) has been attempting to protect. When the multi-verse earth spills over into Spider-Man’s earth, he is recruited by Nick Fury (Sameul L Jackson) to help save the day. All the while Spider-Man just wants to enjoy the international vacation he’s on and spend some time with the girl he likes.

Midsommar

July 3

Hereditary director Ari Aster is back with his next psychological horror flick that follows a group of twenty-something year olds as they take a trip to a festival in Sweden. Things quickly go off the rails, though, as the group begins to realize the festival is actually a horrific cult campsite that has atrocities in store for them.

Stuber

July 12

Kumail Nanjiani teams up with Dave Bautista in this buddy cop-esque comedy. Nanjiani is an innocent Uber driver that winds up getting stuck chauffeuring a rough around the edges cop (Bautista) around Los Angeles. While Bautista has held his own from a comedic perspective during his Marvel run, it’ll be interesting to see how he does headlining a pure comedy film.

The Lion King

July 19

One of Disney’s most beloved stories will be the next to undergo the live action remake treatment. The subject matter alone is enough to make this one a monster hit, but it surely doesn’t hurt that the cast is being led by Donald Glover, Beyoncé, Chiwetel Ejiofor, James Earl Jones, Seth Rogan, John Oliver and more. It’s also being helmed by veteran director John Favreau, who has already found success in the live action territory with his take on The Jungle Book in 2016.

Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood

July 26

Quentin Tarantino is back with his 9th feature film that will pair Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt onscreen for the first time in their careers. DiCaprio plays a fading movie star who is trying to return to prominence, with his trusty stuntman (Pitt) at his side. Hollywood will also take place during the time of the grisly Charles Manson murders that horrified LA, so it’ll be interesting to see how that mixes into the fold. Along for the ride are Margot Robbie, Kurt Russel, Al Pacino, and Timothy Olyphant, to name a few.
