Hunter Killer is an upcoming thriller about an untested American submarine captain who teams with U.S. Navy Seals to rescue the Russian president, who has been kidnapped by a rogue general.
Gerard Butler is back again in his latest high-octane action thriller, Hunter Killer. Here Butler stars as the captain of an elite “Hunter Killer” submarine tasked with going into enemy water to accomplish a deadly mission. Also joining the mission are Gary Oldman, Linda Cardinelli and Common in what looks to be very similar to some recent Butler ventures including Olympus and London Have Fallen. Here are a few takeaways from the trailer:
- A coup occurs in Russia and their president is overtaken by his defense minister
- Russia is building its biggest military fleet in history
- Butler and his crew must work with a team of Navy SEALs to infiltrate Russia, free the president and restore order
Original isn’t exactly the first word that comes to mind after watching this trailer in what looks to be a cross between The Hunt for Red October and Olympus is Fallen. Smart money says this movie will probably have some cool action mixed in throughout, but it will be loaded with clichés and cheesy dialogue. After Butler became a household name with the global success of 300, he’s had some trouble finding strong roles ever since. In the 12 years that have passed since 300, the few quality roles he’s had include RocknRolla, Law Abiding Citizen, and lending his voice to the How to Train Your Dragon series. Hopefully Butler finds some juicy roles to sink his teeth into in the years to come, but it doesn’t look like Hunter Killer will be it. As far as mindless action thrillers go, however, this movie should have no issue fitting the bill.
