Married couple, 98-year-old Jo Byeong-man and 89-year-old Kang Kye-yeol, (at the time of filming) were featured on a Korean television show called Gray-haired lovers and became a fascination for documentary filmmaker Jin Mo-young, who set out to the couple’s mountain village and spent the next 15 months documenting their everyday lives. In the process, he captured a remarkable story of two people who have been married for 76 years and spent all of the time always together. Playful and positive, they approach their lives with great sentiment and as they sense the end is near, prepare for the last moments of their marriage and lives.
My Love, Don’t Cross That River (Korean title:님아, 그 강을 건너지 마오) is a touching story and deeply personal. On it’s release is South Korea, it became the most commercially successful Korean independent film in Korean cinema history, beating out Hollywood blockbusters Interstellar, Exodus: Gods and Kings and The Theory of Everything on the same opening weekend.
