Montreal Comiccon 2019: Playstation & Indie Game Zone

Montreal Comiccon is is hosted at the Palais de Congres, July 5th to 7th. While there’s a lot to look at in terms of pop culture, especially movies, TV and anime, gaming is big part of the conference. Playstation has a presence but the indie studios are the thing with an array of games to try out in the Indie Gaming Zone and the Dreamhack Gaming Zone.

Sony Playstation

Sony Playstation showed up as usual with a booth of both normal games and VR games for everyone to try out. In terms of VR games, they had a selection of the following:

  • The Angry Birds 2 The Movie: Under Pressure VR
  • Trover Saves The Universe VR
  • Five Nights at Freddy’s VR: Help Wanted

Nothing shows off VR’s effectively like horror games which makes the VR version if Five Nights at Freddy’s quite appealing to see especially as it’s a jump scare heavy game. Help Wanted is the VR game with all the games available from this franchise. The normal games available still remain plentiful with some games still in development and some indie titles as well. Here are the titles:

  • Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fuelled
  • Dragon Quest Builders 2
  • R.A.D.
  • Luna
  • Bloodroots
  • Layers of Fear 2
  • Dreams

Definitely a complete group of games with some bigger scale upcoming releases like Dreams. While it still keeps up the remake route for Crash Team Racing as well as some bigger budget games like Dragon Quest Builders 2. The indie games shone with Bloodroots and Layers of Fear 2, one is a constant action blood-splattering game while the latter is the recently released sequel of a very popular horror game.

Blabyrinth- Sleeping Beasts Game

Blabyrinth is an upcoming mobile co-op escape room game. The goal is to find the treasure in the room within the time limit in a procedurally generated labyrinth. Each time will have different items and hints to give it a different experience.

Aeolis Tournament – Beyond Fun Studio

Aeolis Tournament is an up to 8 player game of fox characters soccer game. It quite a fun concept as the players can customize color and characters as well as choose their own teams in a versus match. The CPU fills up the missing players. The players each also have a wind-blowing weapon that they can use to move  the ball but also stronger gusts can also knock out other players as well. It’s quite the free for all competitive game but it’s a lot of fun especially when players can also press a button to see where they are as the match does move fairly quickly.

City Game Studio – Binogure Studio

City Game Studio is the second game for Binogure Studio which is a strategic management simulation game where you play as the founder of a video game company who hopes to make the studio a success through game launches and other overcoming obstacles. The game offers customizable elements and tries to expand from creating realistic and challenging experiences as a modern take of the classic game dev simulation. City Game Studio is currently in Early Access on Steam.

Tech Support: Error Unknown – Dragon Slumber Games

Tech Support: Error Unknown is a mix of various genres as it is simple mouse-only controls to navigate through a novel style procedural dialogue system while giving it a simulation and puzzle mechanics as you play a tech support specialist new to the job that learns about the company being attacked by a hacktivist group and has to make decisions on how to approach the situation. Your choices will lead you to over 20 different major and minor endings. The game was released on February 2019 on Steam.

Reviving different colors will also gain color back onto the land which will open up new islands to discover and other quests to go back to previous locations to complete. Rainbow Billy is currently still in development and is looking at at least 10 hours of gameplay (probably more for completionists).

Shishi: Ballad of the Oracle – Les Studios Shishi

Shishi: Ballad of the Oracle is an upcoming single-player role-playing game where you play as an oracle who has failed to save the world a few times and in this adventure, goes on a journey to save the world in alternate timelines. Filled with cute creatures and dungeons with secrets, Shishi is filled with exploration, fighting and puzzles.

Lemini’s Gate – Ratloop Games

Previously called Convergence, Lemini’s Gate is aiming to introduce a new concept for  first person shooters. It is turn-based and an auto co-op system which means that every turn adds a new player that runs a different route so its more on position and strategy to maximize the efficiency of eliminating the opposing side’s line of attack. Each turn runs for 25 seconds each and between turns, there is a spectator mode to plan the next attack. No doubt a deeper take on the traditional FPS which will give a multiplayer scope an innovative experience.

Spiritfarer – Thunder Lotus Games

Since its announcement last month at E3, Spiritfarer makes its way to Montreal Comiccon with a demo to try out for this upcoming management game about dying where you play as a ferrymaster who builds a boat to go on an adventure travelling the waters to befriend spirits and caring for them until they are released into the afterlife. The art in the game is hand drawn and gives it unique visuals and design.

Tribes of Midgard –  Norsfell

Tribes of Midgard is an upcoming cooperative survival game for up to 10 players. The goal is to defend the village from the giants of Ragnarok. Set within Norse mythology, the game is inspired by Don’t Starve in a different setting where collecting resources is important to the progress as well as hack and slash and exploration. The village is already there nut building up the defenses are important. At the same time, the game is procedurally generated and contains many biomes to discover as well as many creatures that will cause harm while the biggest one is the giant which you can choose to approach on the offense with directional arrows if close by but also choose to go on the defense.

Brainstorm Party – Golden Laugh

Brainstorm Party is a party game currently in development which accommodates up to 4 players in different varieties of game with twists on sports games. It still has a way before full release but is currently on Early Access on Steam.

Struggling – Chasing Rats

Struggling is a wild adventure where you play as ‘flesh with arms’ … as weird as that sounds. Similar to games like Octodad, the player controls the arms of the flesh.
