The Predator is a 2018 action horror film about a young boy who accidentally triggers the universe’s most lethal hunters to return to Earth.
Today we were treated to the teaser trailer to Shane Black’s upcoming release of The Predator. As I’m sure many know, Black acted in the original Predator before going on to pen such hits as Lethal Weapon, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Iron Man 3, and The Nice Guys (a few of which he directed). Black has a knack for witty, comical writing paired with big action, so if there was someone who could get this franchise back on track, he’s a strong candidate.
The trailer begins with a young boy, Rory McKenna (Jacob Tremblay) opening a mysterious package, inside of which is a beacon that he activates. This beacon attracts a ship to earth that is carrying some of the Predator aliens on it. Following the ship’s crash landing, a group of men go to investigate the site and are torn to pieces. We then see some scientists in a lab studying the body of a Predator on a screen, and they infer that they’re attempting hybridization. What this means is that they travel from planet to planet and upgrade themselves. The remainder of the trailer gives us a tiny taste of what’s to come, including plenty of gore and action.
What makes The Predator such an intriguing movie is the fact that Black is at the Helm. If you’re a fan of Black and have seen his work then you know that fun, sarcastic dialogue between bickering characters is a huge strength of his. In addition, his movies also have plenty of nail-biting shootouts and action sequences. I imagine that Black will pair these together quite nicely to give the Predator franchise a healthy revival. The Predator also boasts a lowkey yet solid cast including stars such as Boyd Holbrook, Olivia Munn, Thomas Jane, Sterling K. Brown, Jake Busey, Keegan-Michael Key, and Alfie Allen. As all teasers are, this was only intended to wet our appetites, and the first peak at The Predator has done just that.
