September Guide to In-Theaters Movies: Trailers & More

Monthly Movie Guide is a Monthly Series to keep you the moviegoer updated about upcoming in-theater big studio films in release.

Well, summer blockbuster season is officially over as we start the shift into awards season. September will be the first month of the post-summer blues, and things do appear to be looking rather grim. Nothing exactly pops out next month as a huge draw, but there certainly are a couple movies of interest. Between a creepy nun, a classic monster, Matthew McConaughey, and a magical house, there’s bound to be some movie magic out there.

The Nun

Sept 7

The evil nun spirit, Valak, that terrified moviegoers in The Conjuring 2 is back with her own featured spin off. This time we’ll learn of her origin story as a priest (Demián Bichir) and a soon-to-be nun (Taissa Farmiga) are sent to Romania by the Vatican to investigate the death of a young nun. Quality and plot aside, if the trailers are any depiction of what’s in store, expect to be jumping out of your seat nonstop in this horror flick.

The Predator

Sept 14

Writer/director Shane Black brings a classic monster back to the screen in next month’s The Predator. After a young boy trigger’s the return of the lethal hunters to earth, it’s up to a team of ex-soldiers led by Boyd Holbrook to save the world. This franchise in general paired with Black’s knack for witty dialogue generates some serious interest here, but the trailers have yet to offer much inspiration.

White Boy Rick

Sept 14

The true story of 80’s Detroit street hustler, turned drug kingpin, turned FBI informant, 15 year old Ricky Wershe Jr (Richie Merritt). Newcomer Merritt takes on the lead role here, with McConaughey as his illegal arms dealing father (in what has the looks of a potential Oscar nomination). Don’t sleep on this one, there is a strong supporting and if the story is intriguing enough to really draw in the audience, we could have a great movie on our hands.

The House with a Clock in Its Walls

Sept 21

Finally we have the classic children’s horror novel about a young boy (Owen Vaccaro) that goes to live with his magical uncle (Jack Black) as they try to locate a mysterious clock hidden in his house that has the power to end the world. It’s surprising to see Eli Roth as the director here, a man normally well known for his ultra-violent, gorefest thrillers. Regardless, hopefully it’ll be an adventure of a film, led by a quirky Black, that mixes in plenty of laughs.
