‘Sing Street’ Trailer is Pure 80s Musical Joy

From the makers of Academy Award winning Once and Begin Again comes another musical-based story using the emotional power of music, this one about a boy in a new school who doesn’t quite fit in, falling under the spell of a lovely girl and doing everything he can to win her affection. Fourteen-year-old Cosmo (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo) is growing up in 1980s Dublin in a house with parents who don’t a get along and an older dropout brother. Worse, he’s in a new school where new kids are targets and being tough is the only way to survive. After spotting Ann (Kelly Thornton), he tells her his band is looking for models to be in his music video. Problem is, he’s got no band. But that’s not going to stop him.

Keeping close to the formula he’s made work twice so far, Carney looks to have made another story about a musically impassioned soul who use that love to find the right path. The inspiring trailer, while perhaps revealing a bit too much, hits all the right notes and feels like it could be just as heartwarming and uplifting as he his previous films. The soundtrack is a veritable who’s who of 80s alt-pop hits and should strike right at the nostalgia heart of that generation.
