The Terror Episode 4 – Punished, As A Boy

The Terror is a 2018 television series about the crew of a Royal Naval expedition searching for the Arctic’s treacherous Northwest Passage who discovers instead a monstrous predator.

The latest episode of AMC’s The Terror starts 5 months into the future with Lady Jane Franklin (Greta Scacchi) and Sophia Cracoft (Sian Brooke) going in front of the Royal Navy to see what is being done to find the missing ships. Much to their dismay, a rescue effort has not been set forth.

We then return to the current times aboard The Terror. In the middle of the night another crew member is attacked and found with the top part of his skull removed. Captain Francis Crozier (Jared Harris) sends out a search party only to have another crew member, a young boy, attacked and go missing. While on watch, Cornelius Hickey (Adam Nagaitis) comes across the young boy back on the ship, split in half at the midsection. Hickey also catches a brief glimpse of the monster before it runs away. After hearing the coroner’s report on the body, the officers deduce that neither man nor bear is causing this. In an effort to better understand what is happening, they decide to venture out and find the Eskimo girl, Lady Silence (Nive Nielsen), they’d previously captured.

Hickey beats the officers to the punch and goes after the girl with a couple men. After they capture her and bring her back to the ship, Hickey tells of how he saw the girl interacting with (and possibly controlling) the monster before they grabbed her. He is surprised to find Crozier outraged, as Hickey believed he may have found what has been ordering the monster to attack. After the two men exchange words, Hickey is sentenced to receive 30 lashes, punished as a boy (whipped across the hindquarters). Upon witnessing Hickey receive the lashes the crew looks about to one another uneasily, suggesting they may disagree with the captain’s severe punishment.

In the episode we also see Harry Goodsir (Paul Ready) tending to a patient when he notices discoloration in the man’s mouth. This could be a sign that disease will soon be plaguing the crew. The episode ends with Goodsir bringing Lady Silence dinner, and attempting to communicate her. He tries telling her his name and explaining the reason for their journey.

The crew continues getting picked off one-by-one, Crozier could be losing the support of his men, and now Lady Silence is being accused of controlling the monster! Quite the episode this week with no shortage or gruesome, difficult to watch scenes. Another strong episode of The Terror, I can’t wait to see where this mystery is leading us.
