The Terror Episode 6 – A Mercy

The Terror is a 2018 television series about the crew of a Royal Naval expedition searching for the Arctic’s treacherous Northwest Passage who discovers instead a monstrous predator.

The wheels have officially come off during the latest episode of AMC’s The Terror. We’ve got rations running out, Lady Silence (Nive Nielsen) talking to the monster, and insanity spreading like wildfire (not to mention the actual giant fire).

The episode starts off with the officers having a meeting around their remaining rations. After Captain James Fitzjames (Tobias Menzies) has a one-on-one with Thomas Blanky (Ian Hart), he decides it’ll be in their best interest to begin a walk to safety. Before hitting the men with such news, he also decides that for their final night they’ll have a carnival to drive good spirits.

Harry Goodsir (Paul Ready) had done some tests on John Franklin’s monkey by giving it some of their food. He comes to learn that the food has high traces of lead, which drove it insane. Meanwhile, some of the men on board are dealing with similar symptoms. Lady Silence is still nearby and conducts a sort of ritual to draw in the monster. Upon doing so, she tells it that with her father gone she now should be its shaman, and then proceeds to cut out her tongue.

Captain Francis Crozier (Jared Harris) decides to join the men at the carnival, despite the alcohol withdrawal he’s going through. While there he talks to Fitzjames, who informs him of the plan to begin walking home. In agreement, Crozier starts telling the plan to the men. During his speech, Lady Silence strolls in covered in blood, and then Dr. Stephen Stanley (Alistair Petrie), having gone mad, burns down the carnival and sets himself ablaze. Numerous lives are lost, but Cornelius Hickey (Adam Nagaitis) was able to help most of the men escape, although he did mortally wound one man when cutting open the tent.

This episode was pretty wild. It had a “when it rains it pours” type of vibe, but actually the entire show tends to feel that way. They have now lost a captain, they’re being hunted by a monster, men are going insane, their only attempt at raising spirits resulted in an inferno that took lives. I mean, they just cannot catch a break. Not to mention Lady Silence may now be one with the monster and have control over it. Fingers crossed she uses the new connection to keep it at bay, but that seems unlikely due to her mainly negative interactions so far with the crew. Next week the men look to be starting their walk, I’m going to venture a guess that it doesn’t go well.
