Widows is a 2018 crime thriller about four women with nothing in common except a debt left behind by their dead husbands’ criminal activities, each taking fate into their own hands, conspiring to forge a future on their own terms.

The official trailer for the upcoming thriller Widows dropped today, and oh my does it look like we have an intense one on our hands. Widows is directed by 12 Years A Slave helmer, Steve McQueen, and penned by Gone Girl’s Gillian Flynn, so I don’t hesitate to say that this movie should be very well done. On top of that, it has an absolutely dynamite cast, including the likes of Viola Davis, Liam Neeson, Jon Bernthal, Colin Farrell, Robert Duvall, Michelle Rodriguez, Daniel Kaluuya, and plenty of familiar faces. The premise of the movie focuses on four recent widows, whose husbands had secret lives of crime. On the job that took their lives, the husbands stole $2 million from a local criminal (Brian Tyree Henry) who is now holding the widows accountable for it. The widows find the details of what would’ve been their husbands’ next job, and plan to carry it out themselves to settle their debt.

What I’m really hoping that we get from this is the female version of Heat. There’s nothing like a well done heist movie, and between the director, the writer, and the actors, all the necessary pieces seem to be in place. The trailer looks extremely dark and tense as the group of widows has to learn the trade of being a criminal before attempting to carry out their heist. This will include figuring out where to buy guns, learning how to shoot, planning a major score, etc. What’s going to be so cool and unique about this movie is that it should be pretty relatable. In Heat, the crew are already major criminals who carry out big scores and kill the police at the drop of a hat. These widows are presumably normal, everyday suburbanites, which will be most of the audience watching this film. So for all of us out there, for two hours we’ll get a feel for what entering a life of crime would be like. Don’t be surprised if this one pops back up at awards season as well.
