On Netflix Now: ‘The Breadwinner’

The Breadwinner is a 2017 animated film about a headstrong young girl in Afghanistan who disguises herself as a boy in order to provide for her family.

Animated movies have for decades have been sort of wedged into the children’s or family film genre, and while certainly many of these titles are geared more for adults, most major studios are producing them for these target audiences. Nora Twomey‘s animated feature The Breadwinner can surely be watched by children and families but is a far cry from fantastical themes of typical animated story. It follows a young girl named Parvana (voiced by Saara Chaudry), a girl in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan who must disguise herself as a boy to support her family after her father is arrested. A powerfully-emotional experience, it is full of real life scenarios and as such is a poignant and authentic observation of life in this culture. Produced by Angelina Jolie and earning an Academy Award nomination, this is must see film that you won’t soon forget.

THE LAST WORD

Beautiful art style and a touching story give this deeply moving and empowering film terrific heart.

Very little. It is a dark film that will and should inspire conversation with children.
