On Netflix Now: We’re Watching ‘Extract’

Extract is a 2009 crime comedy about the owner of an extract plant who tries to contend with myriad personal and professional problems, such as his potentially unfaithful wife and employees who want to take advantage of him.

Talk about a film that never sort of found its place and came and went with barely a blip on the the screen, Mike Judge‘s curious comedy caper Extract is surely one that tops the list. This little known movie starring Jason Bateman, Kristen Wiig, and Ben Affleck broke even at the box office and all but disappeared after a short run. It follows the story of hapless Joel Reynolds (Bateman) the owner of a successful extract company whose personal life isn’t running quite as smoothly. However, when an accident at the plant occurs, things begin to spiral as a new employee (Mila Kunis) comes aboard and seems to show some attraction to Joel, though things are not what they seem. Misdirection, miscommunication and schemes to ruin him are set in motion, leading to all sorts of chaos. Some good performance and a few very funny moments make this well worth a look.

THE LAST WORD

The cast really saves this with some good word from Batman, Kunis, and of courses Wiig. It has a unique setting and plenty well earned laughs from the guy who brought us Beavis and Butthead.

It’s not quite the uproarious comedy it aims to be and certainly has some flat moments that miss the mark.
