On Netflix Now: We’re Watching ‘The Rewrite’

The Rewrite is a 2015 romantic comedy about an Oscar-winning writer in a slump who leaves Hollywood to teach screenwriting at a college on the East Coast, where he falls for a single mom taking classes there.

The romantic comedy is a catch-all of sorts, and your either going to dive in and enjoy it or give it an eye-rolling pass. So it is with this admittedly formulaic feature starring master of the genre Hugh Grant and chipper Marisa Tomei even as it has loads of appeal and some very good performances. There are no surprises of course and perhaps there shouldn’t be, but somehow, this film, directed by Marc Lawrence is endlessly satisfying, made so by the great chemistry of the leads and a funny turn by J.K. Simmons. It follows a guy from Hollywood named Keith, who can’t seem to sell a screenplay anymore, taking a job to teach it at the state university in Binghamton, New York. There, he meets plenty of eccentrics as he struggles with his new lot in life. Easy and breezy, this is a sure hit for a cozy night on the couch. Don’t give it a second thought.

THE LAST WORD

There’s no getting around how fun these characters are with genuinely good performances all around. Charming and adorable, this is exactly as advertised.

Hardly a challenge, this might seem fairly generic with Grant barely spreading his wings in terms of trying something new.
