On Netflix Now: We’re Watching ‘Super Dark Times’

SUPER DARK TIMES IS A 2017 THRILLER ABOUT TEENAGERS WHO HAVE BEEN BEST FRIENDS THEIR WHOLE LIVES, BUT WHEN AN ACCIDENT LEADS TO A COVER-UP, THE SECRET DRIVES A WEDGE BETWEEN THEM.

Trouble in high school is nothing new in movies, and sure, many films go to some extremes in telling stories of these coming-of-age years, however, Kevin Phillips‘ Super Dark Times is fairly uncompromising in getting us there in this disturbing, supremely well-acted and stylized thriller. It follows a group of friends in the mid-90s who one day are part of a terrible accident that they desperately try to cover up, only leading to … well, super dark times. Edgy, gripping, and not what you’re expecting, this is sharp commentary that cuts clean with a host of great performances by a young cast. Don’t miss it.

THE LAST WORD

Eerily authentic, this begins like a small town parable but quickly escalates into a nightmare. Very well written and directed, this is a visually creative and often jarring experience well worth a look.

This is the stuff of controversy and works hard to be just that, purposefully leaving the adults out of the picture. If you’re not up for deciphering the metaphor, this might be a bit heavy.
