Outlaw King is a 2018 action/drama film about the great 14th Century Scottish ‘Outlaw King’ Robert The Bruce used cunning and bravery to defeat and repel the much larger and better equipped occupying English army.

Today the trailer dropped for the upcoming historical drama, Outlaw King, that will re-team Chris Pine with his For Hell or High Water director, David Mackenzie. Outlaw King tells the story of Robert the Bruce (Pine) and his journey to unite Scotland and take back her land from the English occupying army led by King Edward I (Stephane Dillane). In order to battle King Edward, who is leading the strongest army in the world, Robert will be training and leading a team of 50 men; taking Scotland back castle by castle. If the trailer is at all like the movie, it looks like this should be an intense one. Dillane, much like his character Stannis on Game of Thrones, is playing a ruthless king that sentences anyone who aids Robert to execution without trial. We’ll also have a bearded and long-haired Aaron Taylor-Johnson joining the fray as Robert’s right hand man, James Douglas.

From the trailer, the one thing that it’s hard to tell is if the combat scenes are going to be done to epic proportions. That is the one thing that really sticks out as questionable in my opinion. None of the battles (albeit we only get glimpses) have the grandeur of a Gladiator, Troy or Braveheart, where right off the bat you knew you were in for extremely well done warfare. Other than that this looks like it should be a quality flick. Mackenzie really brought out Pine’s acting chops in For Hell or High Water, and it looks like he’ll be doing it again. Another thing that is slightly concerning is that for their previous collaboration, they also had a Taylor Sheridan penned screenplay. Here we have a slew of writers teaming up on the screenplay, with no one really matching the quality of what Sheridan brings to the table. But, first time for everything! What I do find reassuring is that this looks to be more of a quality Netflix film like Beasts of No Nation, and less on the Bright side of the spectrum, where they just threw money at the wall.
