The 10th Annual Montreal Comiccon 2018 Guide

The Montreal Comiccon is an entertainment event featuring comic books, toys, games, science-fiction, horror, anime, non-sport cards and collectibles.

Montreal Comiccon celebrates its 10th anniversary this coming weekend, taking place from July 6th to 8th. With it comes a bustling roster of guests and panels for movies, TV, video games and comics from everything we love. Here’s a rundown of some of the must-see events to check out over this coming weekend if you happen to be in Montreal. We’ll be there as well, so be sure to check back for our coverage.

Movies & TV

One of the big draws of Montreal Comiccon is the incredible guest line-up. This year, the star power is pretty incredible. Most of the guests host some fun Q&A panels to share their experiences and answer questions from the audience.

Look first at the film guests, there is Doug Jones, famous for his many creatures portrayal from Pan’s Labyrinth to this year’s Academy Awards Best Picture, The Shape of Water. Action stars like Chuck Norris and Danny Trejo also will make appearances. While you can learn some more about Montrealer Pom Klementieff who plays Mantis in Guardians of the Galaxy 2. For the Star Wars fans, Ray Park is going to make an appearance (and from my experience from before, his Q&A is probably going to be fun because of his dynamic personality). In this same galaxy, the Film Music Wind Orchestra (OVMF) will also have a Star Wars Concert on Friday. OVMF is also having a Harry Potter Concert on Sunday. Talking about franchises, you will also find an interesting panel on another popular franchise about James Bond looking into Ian Fleming’s books to the films.

If TV series is more your jam, there are a lot of guests that fill up that space. Popular 90s series Baywatch will be represented by the appearance of Pamela Anderson. In the same decade and recently revived, The X-Files is also in the house with a special event presented by David Duchovney, Mitch Pileggi and William B. Davis. For something more current, Jennifer Morrison from Once Upon a Time will be there as well as Arrow’s John Barrowman. Talking about superhero series, the showstopper does have to go to the Gotham panel with a triple appearance with David Mazouz, Ben McKenzie and Morena Baccarin.

For some more movie and TV-related events, Val Kilmer and Jason Momoa will be at the conference however only are offering autograph and photo ops. For Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans, the reenactment of the musical episode Once More With Feeling is going to be presented also.

Video Games

Playing into the Montreal landscape full of both AAA and indie gaming studios throughout the city, gaming is a big part of Montreal Comiccon. This year, Playstation is back with their booth as well as the Indie Game Zone, which will have around 30 developers presenting their games. New to the floor is the Dreamhack zone where you can try out the VR game Beat Saber and if you are feeling up to the challenge, a 1v1 CounterStrike match against Miss Harvey, a 5 time world champion of CounterStrike. For a musical experience, OVMF will be having The Universe of Video Games Concert on Saturday.

There are some intriguing panels to look out for also. One of the highlights this year goes to Shadow of the Tomb Raider panel which is an upcoming game slated to release in just a few months. With Kingdom Hearts 3 around the corner, you can catch up or refresh your knowledge of in Explaining The Whole Story of Kingdom Hearts panel. Just like you can expand your knowledge of Pokemon with Pokemon Go: A Trainer’s Guide to up your skills or Pokemon: The Evolution of the Games panels. If you are looking more on a development and creative level on video game genres, there are both French and English panels going on. Some interesting ones are Challenging Biases Through Social Interaction in Games as well as Game Smoochers: Date a Sword or Pigeon Because Love is Weird, which looks at the dating simulator/visual novel genre.

Whether you are into video games, movies or television (as well as comic books that we didn’t cover here), there are a ton of activities to check out this coming weekend. The kiddos can have some lightsaber or medieval combat lessons. There is a masquerade contest and tabletop games as well.
