Year in Review: Our 10 Worst Reviewed Movies of 2017

While we try to give every movie a chance, not all of them have what it takes to get a recommendation. Here are the worst movies reviewed on ThatMomentIn for 2017. And in case you’re looking, we skipped The Snowman.

10) All Eyez On Me

The story of iconic rapper Tupac Shakur is surely one that needs to be told, yet this total misfire from director Benny Boom is sadly not the one. Despite some hints of promise, star Demetrius Shipp, Jr. does what he can and is the best thing about the movie, but everyone and everything else just feels off, with poor writing and lackluster pacing. This is a cheesy ode to one of the best at what he did.

9) Inconceivable

Worst Movies
Inconceivable, 2017 © Baker Entertainment Group

Like a throwback to a late night cable thriller, Jonathan Baker‘s silly drama is almost funny, it’s premise and acting choices so Z-grade in delivery, it could be one of those so bad it’s good movies, but alas, it is not. Playing out in textbook 101 fashion with no tension and everything plotted out so the audience has no sense of mystery or immersion, this makes the mistake of casting the manic Nicholas Cage and then doing absolutely nothing with him. Inconceivable.

8) Rings

Worst Movies
Rings, 2017 © Paramount Pictures

Admittedly, the American version of the Japanese horror thriller Ringu was done right on the first try, however, the studio couldn’t leave well enough alone and continues to go back to the well (pun intended). In this third entry, everything is lazily contrived, overly creepy, and works all too hard to be both, making this a bland and unnecessary watch. Devoid of scares, this is one to skip. Go watch the original.

7) Baywatch

Worst Movies
Baywatch, 2017 © Paramount Pictures

There’s no denying the energy and commitment Dwayne Johnson seems to have in making a movie, especially remakes and reboots, and like most of these films, Seth Gordon‘s Baywatch is a washout. Based on a television series that is already campy and over-the-top, there’s little room for this to work, even with a pretty strong cast that delivers some laughs. This is just an uninteresting mess.

6) The Layover

Worst Movies

It almost feels a little unfair to single out this ridiculous comedy, one that is meant to be kinda obnoxious with a couple a beautiful women trying to give a spin on roles traditionally given to men. It’s just too tame, never getting as dark or as raunchy as it seems to want to be. While the the duo of Alexandra Daddario and Kate Upton are certainly fun to watch, there’s not a laugh in this bland, almost unwatchable movie.

5) Father Figures

Worst Movies

Many modern trendy comedies are trying to be bad, but bad in a sort of raucous way with aggressively inept characters wrecking havoc wherever they go. This seems to be the inspiration behind Lawrence Sher‘s Father Figures, but there is no chemistry between stars Owen Wilson and Ed Helms and the film fails to generate any sympathy when it tries to get emotional. A waste of good talent.

4) CHiPs

Worst Movies
CHiPs, 2017 © Primate Pictures

Once again, a feature film based on a beloved television series that is bungled from the start. Dax Shepard‘s curiously off-center reboot of CHiPs is a predictable, low-brow comedy with barely anything redeemable about it. Stilted and offering nothing that either satires of elevates the original, it’s a cheap attempt at nostalgia that fails from the first rev of an engine.

3) Daddy’s Home 2

Worst Movies
Daddy’s Home 2, 2017 © Paramount Pictures

Most movies don’t need a sequel. Daddy’s Home is clearly one of them. This cash-in on the moderately successful original that spends much of the movie being over-the-top and obnoxious before reeling in the predictable heartwarming finale, a lazy recipe that is already well worn out. Here, the writing is mostly to blame, though an overstuffed cast and some all-too-on-the-nose role for Mel Gibson and John Lithgow don’t help much. You can bet there will be a third coming next year.

2) The Bye Bye Man

Worst Movies
The Bye Bye Man, 2017 © Intrepid Pictures

An infuriating mess with so many questions left unanswered, this perplexing horror film from Stacy Title is a hopeless lot of bad acting, poor direction and empty promises. Clearly more interested in style over substance, there is nothing to keep you invested in characters nor story, with everything thrown into the look and atmosphere. This is a senseless, boring movie that utterly wastes all opportunities to go where it could. Almost the worst movie of the year.

1) Hangman

Worst Movies
Hangman, 2017 © Patriot Pictures

What on Earth is happening here? Yes, Al Pacino hasn’t exactly been putting everything he once had into his movies, but Johnny Martin‘s Hangman is a shockingly mishandled and derivative cop thriller that will leave you scratching your head from the first frame. Woefully predictable and unimaginative, this feels like the filmmakers were purposefully trying to make a generic, one-dimensional, paint-by-numbers crime drama, and by gum, they succeeded. The worst of 2017.
