Actor James Grixoni Talks with us about his new film ‘Potato Dreams of America’

James Grixoni (Twin Peaks : The Return, Jameson) says his latest film POTATO DREAMS OF AMERICA is a film about “embracing one’s self with love and acceptance”.

You’re a long way from Twin Peaks here, James! Before we get onto this latest movie, how much of a blessing was it to be involved in Twin Peaks? Has it opened a lot of doors?

Twin Peaks was a dream. A completely unexpected journey into a deeper world of art, acting, film making and creativity. It has opened a lot of doors and I am deeply humbled and grateful for all the opportunities that have come my way. Sincerely. I met my manager and publicist through Twin Peaks and now here I am talking to you. It has been an awesome ride

Were you offered similar roles to the Deputy after the series or have you been lucky enough to escape typecasting?

I have been lucky enough to work as many different characters from many different backgrounds. The thing that interests me is the ability to try on someone else’s consciousness, wear their psychology for a while. There is always a unique and human experience going on, regardless of any similarities between characters.

When did this project come to be – “Potato Dreams of America”?

A great film to watch to get a better understanding of “Potato Dreams of America” and how it came to be is “Little Potato” on the Criterion Channel. It is basically a short documentary explaining Wes and his mother’s journey from Russia to the United States. Give it a look-see and learn something.

And the inspiration? Is it a true story?

This film is 99.9% autobiographical, it follows the life of Wes Hurley (the director) as a child and his mother leaving Russia to start a new life in America. Beautifully shot, beautiful acting and an amazingly bizarre and beautiful story. The film is currently playing in eight cities across the country (Seattle, Houston,New Orleans, San Fransisco, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, LA) and will be On Demand February 22nd.

What appealed to you about this particular character?

As an actor, my job is to step into the lives of other people, to understand and embody their minds and spirits, and to ultimately tell their story for the camera or stage or… wherever. This role was offered to me by Wes and I felt so curious and excited to investigate everything I could about it. This character is so far removed from anything else I have ever played and it speaks on levels deeper than most stories I’ve seen; it was an honour to have been asked to be a part of this project.

Would you say there’s a message in the movie?

In my opinion, I believe this film is about embracing one’s self with love and acceptance.
