Director Ken May on His New Film ‘Future Fear’

In the distant future, a female archaeologist is being hunted by alien attackers and so takes refuge in the ruins of a long-extinct civilization. There, she must employ ancient technology in hopes of finding a way to fight back and escape the planet.

Written, directed by and starring Ken May, with Eric Reingrover, Otis Johnson, Raven Ebner and Kaylith Von KolaFuture Fear is available on digital June 8 with a DVD release to follow in August. We spoke to genre staple Ken May (Ebola Rex, Apex Predators, VHS Violence) about the film.

What a fitting title, considering the world right now. Did you come up with it before the pandemic though?

Thank you. I did actually. In fact the film was finished in September of 2019, but due to the pandemic, it took until now to be able to be released. I think that fear of the unknown is one of the roots of all other fears.

I take it you’re a big sci-fi fan?

Definitely. I grew up watching all the cheesy old movies with my dad, and to this day I love seeing a gorgeous sci-fi movie on the big screen. I’m very escapist with my love for sci-fi.

And any films of the past that inspired it?

There’s not a lot of Sci-fi horror anthology films out there. But some of my favorite Sci-fi horror would be the Alien series, Sunshine, and Event Horizon.

Can you talk about the effects used in the film?

A few people worked on the effects, but Stephen Sprinkles’s segment is very VFX heavy, and that’s all him! Excellent work.

Do you normally write with a budget in mind or just go for broke and worry about the money later?

Yeah, I try to look at what resources I have, and what I can build with them. If I have a budget, all the better, but I’m used to working form scratch

Is it a movie with a message?

Not really. At least not as a whole. There’s commentary in there, but it’s more incidental to the story.

Tell us how you hooked up with Wild Eye Releasing?

I had heard what a great experience SCS Entertainment had with them, so I decided to reach out myself. It’s been a great journey so far.
