Everly, 2014 © Dimension Films

Everly

The story of an out-for-revenge prostitute might seem a bit cliché but this Salma Hayeck action-thriller still manages to have some fun with the standards. She is the titular Everly, working undercover for police to take down the vicious criminal overlord Taiko (Hiroyuki Watanabe), though when he finds out, it’s a deadly game of cat mouse as she fights of waves of killer sent to end her. A case of all style and little substance, this is nonetheless a sure pick if you’re looking to spend a few quality hours with a woman absolutely wrecking the place.

The Assassin

Set in the Tang Dynasty, this stylistic action film sees Nie Yinniang (Shu Qi) as a rather successful assassin, cutting her way through corrupt government officials on the behest of her master, Jiaxin (Fang-Yi Sheu). However, when Nie pulls back on one assignment, she is tested further by Jiaxin, putting her on her most troubling mission yet. A huge hit and critical favorite, this slow-paced thriller is truly a mesmerizing journey of style and action with a terrific performance from Qi who does it all. Don’t miss this.

What Happened to Monday

In the not so distance future, things are not so bright for families looking to raise a brood as governments are enforcing a One-Child law to reduce poverty and over-population. The rule is led by Nicolette Cayman (Glenn Close) at the Child Allocation Bureau, who is under pressure when she learns that there might be seven identical sisters (all of them portrayed by Noomi Rapace) in hiding, kept secret for years by grandfather (Willem Dafoe). Rapace is the whole show here, creating seven incredibly distinct personalities in this sci-fi action thriller that hit all kinds of beats to satisfy. Read our review.

Wanted, 2008 © Universal Pictures

Wanted

Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy) has a dead end job at an office where his best friend Barry (Chris Pratt) is having an affair with his girlfriend. On top of that, one day, a beautiful woman named Fox (Angelina Jolie) appears out of the blue to inform him that his long lost father was actually a world-class assassin, but has been killed, with his murdered now after him. Forced to join the fight, Gibson gets trained by the spectacularly skilled Fox in trying to stay alive. While McAvoy gets top billing, this is Jolie’s show, who once again proves she does action like no other, smooth, sexy, and deadly. Great fun.

Kill Bill Vol. 1, 2003 © Miramax

Kill Bill Vol 1 / Kill Bill Vol. 2

The epic story of the Bride (Uma Thruman) in Quentin Tarantino‘ Kill Bill films are truly some of the best action movies ever made, with the two-part series centered on a woman left for dead who travels back on a road of vengeance. Homaging plenty of classic 70s films along the way, the heavily stylized movies are filled with sensational dialogue and loads of jaw-dropping fight choreography. Even if you’ve seen these seminal female action movies, they just get better with time and deserve a second look. Simply the best.
