On Netflix Now: ‘The Iron Giant’

The Iron Giant is a 1999 animated fantasy film about a young boy who befriends a giant robot from outer space that a paranoid government agent wants to destroy.

Great story for children and adults, this is a well-animated and acted movie from with a ton of heart.

Not a thing. This is great entertainment with a timeless message.

It’s always great to go into a film with an expectation that is completely flipped on its ear. That’s pretty much what Brad Bird‘s exceptional The Iron Giant does for most who see it. Based on the 1968 novel The Iron Man by Ted Hughes, the film is set in 1957 right after the Sputnik launch where an object from space crash lands in the forests of Maine. Nine-year-old Hogarth Hughes (voiced by Eli Marienthal) finds it first and quickly befriends the damaged behemoth and hides it in the family barn where new discoveries await as the military draws close and his widowed mother (Jennifer Aniston) try to understand. A terrific story that is surprisingly deep and very well animated, the movie earned well-deserved critical praise for its story and direction, not to mention an impressive bit of voice work from Vin Diesel as the robot. If you haven’t seen this, don’t miss this great opportunity. Read about a great moment in The Iron Giant.
