With 2018 at a close we move onto 2019, a year that quite possibly will be the biggest year all time at the box office. Not only will we be graced with finales to the Avengers and Star Wars franchises, we’ll also be treated to live action remakes of some of the biggest Disney classics. Despite this, outside of one sure fire blockbuster, the year will be off to a relatively slow start this January. Let’s take a quick peek at what to expect.

Escape Room

January 4

Don’t set your sights too high on this thriller about a group of people who get trapped in a deadly series of escape rooms. In addition to a cheesy premise, the movie features a cast of relative unknowns, most notably being Deborah Ann Woll who plays Karen Page in the former Daredevil series.

Replicas

January 11

Keanu Reeves stars alongside Alice Eve in this mystery thriller about a scientist that becomes obsessed with bringing his dead family back to life. With this being a Reeves movie that doesn’t include Matrix or John Wick in the title, this is most likely a movie to avoid. Not to mention it’s already being plagued by negative reviews.

The Upside

January 11

Here we have another release that is already suffering from painfully negative reviews. Kevin Hart stars as an ex-con that is hired to help a wealthy quadriplegic (Bryan Cranston), and the film will focus on the relationship they form. This is a remake of the 2011 classic, The Intouchables, that ranks 40 on IMDb’s top 250. It’s probably safe to say this is a remake that should not have happened.

Glass

January 18

Hype could not be higher for M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming film that is creating a universe of sorts as it brings together characters from his previous films Unbreakable and Split. After being placed in a psychiatric prison together, Mr. Glass (Samuel L. Jackson) recruits Kevin Wendell Crumb (James McAvoy) to team up and wreak havoc using his personality, The Beast. It’s up to superhero David Dunn (Bruce Willis) to escape the same prison, and thwart Glass’s evil plan. The trailers for Glass have looked fantastic, so here’s to hoping the Shyamalan-aissance continues!

The Kid Who Would Be King

January 25

There hasn’t been a ton of buzz around this feature about a band of kids that embark of an epic quest to take down an evil menace. There are some familiar faces in this one, though, featuring the likes of Mission Impossible alum, Rebecca Fergusson, and Sir Patrick Stewart.

Serenity

January 25

Oscar-nominated writer Steven Knight is at the helm of this thriller about a fishing boat captain whose past comes back to haunt him when his ex-wife tracks him down with a desperate plea for help. This one has a phenomenal cast including Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Diane Lane, Djimon Hounsou and Jason Clarke. The trailer for this one certainly draws some interest, so keep your eyes on this sleeper.
