During the Korean War, ten-year-old Deok-soo’s family lives in the North Hamgyong province in what is now present day North Korea. They hear news that Chinese troops have invaded his village so they decide to flee to Busan, a city on the southern end of present day South Korea, where Deok-soo’s aunt lives. The U.S. Navy offers safe passage on many transport boats and so Deok-soo carries his youngest sister on his back, but in the panic and horde of people, he drops his sister Mak-soon in the shallow water. His father must search for his daughter and tells Deok-soo that he will return, but if not in time, “You are the man of the house, take care of the family and we will meet at your aunt’s store in Busan.” Tragically, as soon as his father is off the boat, it departures.
한국전쟁 때 이북 함경북도 흥남에 살던 덕수네 가족은 중공군이 마을에 침입한다는 소식을 듣고 피난길을 떠나게 된다. 덕수는 어린 막순을 업고 배에 오르다가 막순을 물 속에 떨어뜨리게 되고 막순이를 찾기 위해 아버지는 배에서 내린다. 그 순간 배는 출발하게 되고 가족들은 이별하게 된다. 아버지는 덕수에게 “부산에 사는 고모네 가게 “꽃분이네”에서 만나자고 약속을 하고 헤어지게 됩니다. 그러면서 덕수에게 너는 이제부터 ‘이 가정의 가장’이다. 그러니 가족들을 잘 보살펴야 한다. 라고 얘기한다.”
Deok-soo makes it safely to his aunt’s store with his sister, brother and his mother. His father never arrives. Time passes and Deok-soo follows his father’s last words and lives his life full of responsibility. He doesn’t say no to taking on the hard jobs at the docks where he works but his family is as poor as ever. Actually his dream is to be a Navy ship’s captain but he needs a lot of money for his younger brother, who is good at studying and passes the entrance examination to Seoul National University. At that time, a friend of his named Dal-goo (Oh Dal-su) shows him a recruitment poster for German miners. Deok-soo thinks it’s a golden opportunity for making a lot of money, so he gives up his dream and travels alone to Germany.
3남매를 데리고 부산에 내려온 덕수네 가족들은 그렇게 고모와 같이 살게 된다. 덕수는 마지막 아버지의 말씀을 떠받들어 가장으로써의 책임감을 가지고 살아간다. 부둣가에서 힘든 일도 마다하지 않고 일하는 덕수, 열심히 일하지만 집안 사정은 나아지지 않는다. 사실 덕수의 꿈은 선장이지만 집안 상황은 어렵고 공부 잘하는 둘째 동생은 서울대에 합격하게 되고 큰돈이 필요했던 상황 친구 달구는 독일 광부 파견 모집 공고를 덕수에게 보여준다. 덕수는 많은 돈을 벌 수 있는 절호의 찬스라고 생각했다. 덕수는 자신의 꿈을 포기하고 독일 광부 면접을 보고 독일로 가게 된다.
He endures a tough life in Germany while thinking of his family. Meanwhile, he meets Young-ja (Yunjin Kim of LOST) who is a Korean Nurse in Germany. He loves her at first sight. They start dating and their love grows. But, after some time, he must go back to Korea because his work Visa will expire. Before he leaves, they have passionate sex for the first time and then leaves her. Three months later, she visits him in Korea while being pregnant with his baby. He’s very happy seeing her again and they get married. He then tries again for his longtime dream of being a Navy ship’s captain, so he takes an examination. He receives his letter of acceptance to the Navy. He and his family are over the rainbow. But suddenly his aunt passes away and his uncle wants to sell the store because he needs the money. When Deok-soo gets the news, he gives up his dream again to join Navy and takes over the store. The store is not just a store for him. Deok-soo believes his father is still alive and will visit his family some day. He takes over the store but his household economic circumstances leave him still without money. With few options, he decides to work in Vietnam but his wife says, “It’s your life, but you’re not living it.” Young-sa feels pity for her husband because he always leaves behind his hopes in life to sacrifice for his family.
가족 생각을 하면 힘든 타지의 삶을 버티고 있던 덕수는 한국 간호사인 영자를 만나게 된다. 덕수는 영자에게 한 눈에 반하게 되고 그 둘은 알콩달콩 사랑을 키워가던 중 덕수의 비자가 만료가 되어 독일을 떠나야 하는 상황에 직면하게 된다. 떠나기 전 그 둘은 뜨거운 사랑을 나누고 힘겹게 이별하게 된다. 그 후 3개월 후 임신한 영자는 한국에 덕수를 찾아온다. 그 둘은 결혼하게 된다. 덕수의 오랜 꿈인 선장을 위해 해병대 시험을 친 덕수를 합격하게 된다. 하지만 고모가 돌아가시고 고모부가 꽃분이 가게를 팔아버리려고 한다. 이 사실을 알게 된 덕수는 꽃분이네를 지키기위해 고모부 가게를 인수하겠다고 말한다. 꽃분이 가게는 그냥 가게가 아니다. 덕수가 헤어지기 전 아버지와 만나기로 한 장소이다. 덕수는 아직까지 그의 아버지가 살아서 그 곳을 찾아올것만 같아 그 가게를 다른 사람에게 팔수가 없었다. 그래서 무리해서 그 가게를 인수하게 된다. 가정경제가 힘든 덕수는 다시 베트남으로 일하러 가기로 한다. 그의 아내 영자는 그런 남편 덕수에게 “당신인생인데, 그 안에 당신이 없냐구요!” 자기의 삶은 뒤로한 채 가족들을 위해서만 평생을 희생하는 덕수가 영자는 안타깝다.
Directed by Yoon Je-kyoon, he hopes that after watching the film, the audiences really understand why he made this movie. The beginning of the film is a very personal story but from the perspective of Korean parents and children watching, it becomes our story, a page in our history during the Korean War. He wants to draw the plot through what might seem a most ordinary life that becomes the greatest story. In modern times, everything moves with incredible growth and fast changes but Yoon shows us the slow pace of traditional Korea and uses the traditional market as a backdrop for this story to illustrate that effect.
감독은 관객들이 이 영화를 보고 왜 이 영화를 만들었는지 그 진심을 알아주면 좋겠다. 개인적인 이야기에서 출발했지만 부모와 자식의 입장에서 우리 모두의 이야기이기도 하다. 라고 얘기했다. 가장 평범한 삶을 통해 가장 위대한 이야기를 담고 싶었기 때문에 눈부신 발전과 함께 빠르게 발전하는 지금 시대에 조금은 천천히 느린 걸음으로 변해가는 ‘시장’을 배경으로 그려냈다고 설명했다.
For main actor, Hwang Jung-min, a man in his early forties, playing the role from early twenties to mid-seventies was a great challenge. His performance is especially touching. This story is about a man who lives for only his family, sacrificing everything for their needs first and always remembering the last words his father gave him. He could be my father. While watching the film, I was moved to tears by the character’s reminiscence to my own dad. He also lived a similar life like Deok-soo, growing up in the same time. The film makes me understand my father’s life, and for many other Koreans, theirs as well.
주인공 남자 배우 황정민은 20대부터 70대까지 격변의 현대사를 관통하며 살아온 한 남자의 일대기를 소화해 내야했다. 작품을 통해 한 사람의 일생을 연기한 것은 그에게는 새로운 도전이었다. 그의 연기는 감동적이었다. 이 이야기는오직 가족을 위해 희생하며 굳세게 살아온 우리들의 아버지이야기를 다룬 영화이다. 덕수의 삶은 나의 아버지의 삶일 수도 있다. 이 영화를 보는 내내 나의 아버지가 생각나서 가슴이 뭉클했다. 나의 아버지도 덕수와 같은 삶을 살았고 그와 동시대에 살았다. 국제시장을 보고 나서 좀 더 나의 아버지를 이해하게 되었고 많은 한국인들 또한 나이든 사람들을 더 이해했으리라 믿는다.
