When he is 18 years old, Woo-jin (Woo-hee Chun) wakes up with a brand new face. This change in his appearance begins to happens every morning. One day he is a man and another day is a woman, sometimes an old man sometimes young, etc. Sometimes he changes into a foreigner so he only speaks foreign languages but he can still only understand Korean. When his mom discovers what’s happening to Woo-jin, she conceals him in their house instead of bringing him to a hospital. Naturally, everything changed in his life.
18살인 우진이 어느 날 잠에서 깨어나보니 전혀 다른 사람으로 변해 있었다. 그 날이후 자고일어나면 그의 얼굴은 매일 매일 달라져있었다. 어떤 날은 남자, 어떤 날은 여자, 또 어떤 날은 어린아이 등 다양하게 변했다. 가끔씩 외국인으로 변하기도 했는데, 웃긴 점은 본인은 외국말을 하면서 한국말 밖에 이해를 못한다는 점이다. 우진의 어머니가 이 사실을 알았을 때 그녀는 우진을 병원으로 데려가기보다는 집안에 숨겼다. 자연스럽게 그의 삶은 완전히 변했다.
He couldn’t go to school anymore and he couldn’t be with his friends. One of those friend, named Sang Baek (Lee Dong-hwi), couldn’t understand why Woo-jin suddenly didn’t show up at school so visits Woo-jin’s house. A woman answers and Sang Baek thinks the woman is Woo-jin’s mother. Sang Baek met her a few times before but he couldn’t remember exactly her face. They sit down at a table and they talk about Woo-jin. While they are talking, Woo-jin’s real mother arrives.
우진은 더이상 학교에 갈 수도 없었고 친구들과 같이 있을 수도 없었다. 우진이 갑자기 학교도 나오지 않고 행방을 감추자 궁금하게 여긴 친구 상백이 우진이 집에 찾아온다. 한 여성이 우진의 집 문을 열어준다. 상백은 그녀가 우진이 어머니라고 생각했다. 그는 그 전에 우진어머니를 몇차례 만난적은 있지만 정확하게 그녀의 얼굴을 기억하지는 못했다. 그들은 마루에 앉아서 우진에 대해 얘기를 나누며 우진을 기다리고 있다. 그 순간 우진의 진짜 어머니가 집 안으로 들어온다.
Now Sang Baek realizes that the woman he’s been talking too is not Woo-jin’s mother, so he looks upon her with a fixed gaze. Woo-jin decides to tell Sang Baek everything, hoping his friend will accept the truth. He is so lonely and needs a friend. When Woo-jin explains about this strange changing that has overcome him, Sang Baek looks at Woo-jin with exactly same face as his mother did, that of shock. Woo-jin anxiously awaits his reaction. Suddenly Sang Baek laughs his head off, fully accepting this weird reality as Woo-jin feels relief.
상백은 그와 같이 얘기를 나누던 여성이 우진의 어머니가 아니라는 사실을 알아차렸다. 상백은 그녀에게 시선을 고정시킨채 쳐다보고 있다. 우진은 그의 이상한 현상을 받아주기를 바라며 상백에게 모든것을 털어놓기로 결심한다. 사실 우진은 정말 외롭다. 그는 친구가 필요했다. 우진이 상백에게 그 사실을 고백했을 때 상백 또한 우진 어머니가 처음 우진의 증세를 알았을 때와 같은 충격적인 표정으로 우진을 바라보았다. 우진은 초조하게 상백의 다음 반응을 기다리고 있다. 갑자기 상백은 배꼽을 잡고 웃었다. 상백을 멍하니 쳐다보던 우진도 안도의 한숨을 쉬며 같이 웃는다.
After this, they spend time together and become best friends. Luckily Woo-jin is creative and good at making furniture. Working with other people isn’t necessary, so one day, Sang Baek suggests a business idea in which Woo-jin makes the furniture and his friend runs the company. Woo-jin agrees and makes personalized furniture and soon their business takes off. Not long after, Woo-jin goes to another furniture store where a woman works as a furniture seller. Her name is Yi-soo (Hyo-ju Han), and Woo-jin can’t stop himself from staring. She is beautiful and he thinks her personality is similar to his. From that day on, he develops a big crush. Ironically, before he met her, he actually started to accept his situation and deal with it. Now he wants to talk with her and be with her. He visits her store every day as a different person, and after spending more time with her, he suddenly wishes for a normal life.
이 사건이 있은 후, 그들은 많은 시간을 같이보내며 절친한 친구가 된다. 운좋게도 우진은 기발한 가구를 잘 만들었다. 이 일은 굳이 다른 사람들과 같이 일 할 필요는 없었다. 어느 날 상백은 우진에게 우진은 가구를 만들고 상백은 우진이 디자인 한 가구로 가구 회사를 영업해서 같이 가구회사를 운영하자고 제안한다. 우진 또한 상백의 아이디어에 동의해 우진은 그 만의 기막힌 아이디어로 가구를 만든다. 자기에게 맞는 가구 즉 개인 가구를 디자인한다. 곧 그들의 사업은 대박이 나고 유명세를 탄다. 우진은 자기가 디자인한 가구에 부칠 소품을 구하기위해 다른 가구 가게에 가게 된다. 그곳에서 우진은 이수를 만난다. 이수는 그 가구공장에서 고객들에게 상담을 하고 파는 업무를 맡고 있었다. 우진은 그녀에게서 눈을 뗄수가 없었다. 그녀는 너무 아름답고 우진 생각에 그녀의 성격이 그하고 비슷하다고 생각했다. 그날이후부터 우진은 그녀에 대한 생각을 저버릴수가 없었다. 사실 우진은 그녀를 만나기 전에는 그의 상황을 받아들이고 살아왔다. 그러나 지금 우진은 그녀에게 얘기도 하고 싶고 그녀와 같이 있기를 원했다. 우진은 매일같이 그녀가 일하는 가구 가게에 매일 다른 모습으로 그녀에게 다가가 얘기했다. 그러면 그럴수록 그는 그녀를 더 애절히 원하게 되었고 우진은 그저 다른 사람들과 같이 평범하게 살기를 간절히 원했다.
He makes a big decision. When he wakes up as a handsome looking young man he decides to confess to her his he likes her. On the big day, he goes to her job and buys some furniture and tells her, “Do you prefer to eat Sushi or Steak?” This surprises her. He said, “I practiced a lot because I want to eat dinner with you. Today.” She already has a plan so she says maybe next time but he keeps saying to her it must be today. His persistence pays off and she eventually accepts his offer and they have dinner together in Woo-jin’s furniture store. They have a great time together and he asks her to meet again the next day. This is when he discovers a solution to his problem: Do not sleep.
우진은 그가 젊고 매력적인 잘생긴 남자로 일어나게 되면 이수에게 좋아한다고 고백하기로 결심한다. 대망의 그 날, 그는 이수의 직장에 찾아가 가구를 구입하고 그녀에게 “초밥을 좋아해요 아님 스테이크?” 라고 묻는다. 그녀는 우진의 돌발적인 행동에 놀란다. 우진은 “오늘 당신과 저녁먹기 위해 엄청나게 연습했다.” 고 말한다. 이수는 약속이 있어 다음에 같이 먹자고 얘기하지만 우진은 꼭 오늘이어야만한다고 고집을 부린다. 결국 그녀의 승낙을 받은 우진은 그녀를 데리고 우진의 가구 공장에 간다. 그들은 재미있는 시간을 보내고 우진은 그녀에게 내일 만날 약속을 받아낸다. 이수와 헤어진 우진은 내일 이수를 만나기 위해 하나의 해결책을 생각해낸다. 잠을 자지 않는다면 다른 모습으로 바뀌지도 않을테니 잠을 자지 않기로 한다.
He holds out for three days without sleep, spending each day with her, and even though he couldn’t sleep, he feels so happy. He feels like a normal person now and never thought he could actually have a girlfriend. On the third days, he brings her home and tells her let’s meet in the morning for breakfast. When he is on his way back to his house, he falls asleep on the subway. When he wakes up, he falls into the pit of despair because he has changed. The next morning, she waits for him, and he is there but as a different person. He couldn’t show himself to her. She calls him and worries about him. He doesn’t want to lose her and he doesn’t want to live like before so he makes a plan to confess everything to her. When he does, the story frightens her and she couldn’t accept him this way, confused and angry and disbelieving. But that’s not the the end of the story.
이수와 같이 시간을 보내기 위해 3일 동안 잠을 자지 않은 우진 그러나 행복했다. 그는 마치 평범한 사람인 듯했고 사실 그는 그의 인생에서 여자친구를 가질수없을거라고는 상상도 하지 않았다. 잠을 자지 않은 3일째 되던 날 그녀를 집에 데려다주고 내일 아침 같이 먹기로하고 집에 돌아오던 우진은 지하철에서 그만 잠이 들어버렸다. 우진이 잠에서 깨어났을 땐 그는 그 전의 잘생긴 남자가 아닌 나이 든 아저씨로 변해있었다. 우진은 창문에 비친 그를 보며 절망에 빠진다. 다음날 아침 우진을 기다리고 있는 이수, 우진은 그녀의 주변에 서 있었지만 그녀 앞에 나타날수가 없었다. 그녀는 우진에게 전화하고 그를 걱정한다. 우진은 그녀를 잃고 싶지않았다. 그리고 예전처럼 살고 싶지도 않았다. 그는 그녀에게 모든 사실을 털어놓을 계획짠다. 그 사실을 안 이수는 소스라치게 놀란다. 그녀는 혼란스럽고 화도 나고 이 사실을 믿을 수가 없었다. 그리고 그런 그를 받아들일수가 없었다 그러나 이것이 이 이야기의 마지막은 아니다.
Directed by Baek Jong-yeol, the film is based on an Intel and Toshiba joint venture advertising campaign, which follows a similar story. After watching the advertisement, he was curious about what happened with the characters. That’s why he made this film. Baek focuses on their love and how love can change their relationship.
감독 백종열은 인텔과 도시바가 합작해서 만든 광고를 토대로 이 영화를 제작했다. 백감독은 이 광고를 처음 접했을 때 그 후에 그들에게 어떤 일이 벌어질까하는 궁금증으로 이 영화를 만들게 되었다. 백감독은 그들의 사랑과 그 사랑이 그들의 관계를 어떻게 변화시키는가에 중점을 두었다.
When I watched the trailer, I thought if I have this life it would be fun. One day I could be a pretty girl, the next day a handsome man, and then I can date easily. However, I learned while I was watching the movie, how happy I truly am as myself. People complain about their daily routines, including me. When people wake up in the morning, they expect and hope for something special to happen in their life. This film changed my thinking. People should be grateful to be normal, sharing life together and aging together. If I can be like the main character for only one month and then go back to before, I can maybe enjoy and have fun. But the main character has been changing since when he was 18 years old. In the film Yi-soo, tearful about the relationship, says to her sister, who knows Woo-jin’s fate, “I can remember everything about him except his face.” How sad. Who can be with him? The other issue is inner side of beauty. People say that inner beauty is more important than outer beauty but the real world is very different. If Woo-jin had not been the handsome young man, Yi-soo might not have been interested in dating with him and when Woo-jin wanted to talk with Yi-soo, he also waited until he had a handsome face. We emphasize inside beauty but we can’t ignore people’s appearance and it’s often a huge impact on that first impression.
처음 예고편을 봤을 땐 진짜 재미있는 삶이겠다. 싶었어요. 어떤 날은 예쁜 여자, 어떤 날은 잘생긴 남자 그러나 영화를 보면서 평범하게 사는 게 얼마나 행복한가를 느꼈어요. 사람들은 내 일상은 너무 평범해 라고 불평들을 늘어놓지만 나 역시 그런 사람 중에 한명이었다. 아침에 눈을 뜨면 뭔가 새롭고 특별한 일이 일어나기를 간절히 소망한다. 그러나 이 영화를 보고나면 생각이 달라진다. 같이 공유하고 같이 늙어가는 것만으로도 큰 행복이고 감사해야 한다는 것을 느낀다. 만약 한 한달 정도만 이러다 다시 원래의 나로 돌아갈 수 있다면 얼마든지 재미있게 이 한 달을 즐길 수 있지만 18살 때부터 계속 이런 삶을 살아야 한다면 어떨까? 주인공 여자가 한 말 중에 “그 사람과 했던 일, 보냈던 시간들은 생생하게 기억이 나는데 그 사람 얼굴이 기억이 나지 않는다.” 얼마나 슬플까? 과연 누가 그 사람 옆에 있어줄 수 있을까? 사람들은 내면의 아름다움이 외면의 아름다움보다 더 중요하다고 하지만 현실은 다르다. 만약 우진이 이수에게 데이트 신청을 했을 때 우진이 잘생긴 외모를 가지고 있지 않았다면 이수가 데이트를 승낙했을까 그리고 우진 또한 이수에게 데이트 신청을 하기 위해 잘생긴 얼굴을 가질 때까지 기다렸다. 아무리 내면이 중요하다고 강조를 해도 외모의 영향을 안 받을 수 없고 첫인상에 엄청난 영향을 미친다는 것은 무시할 수 없는 사실이다.
