Up In The Air is a 2009 drama about a man who enjoys living out of a suitcase for his job, travelling around the country firing people, but finds that lifestyle threatened by the presence of a potential love interest, and a new hire.
One of the most talked about and celebrated films of 2009, Ivan Reitman‘s mix of drama and romance was a surefire hit with leading man George Clooney starring opposite Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick. Clooney plays Ryan Bingham, a 40-ish businessman who lives on the move, making a living in human resources as a corporate ‘hitman’ of sorts, hired to fire people from companies committed to downsizing. His main goal though is to be the youngest person ever to acquire ten million miles with American Airlines. He’s having a casual fling with Alex (Farmiga), another constantly traveling businesswoman and is soon partnered with Natalie (Kendrick), a young new hire with some ambitious ideas for the company’s future. Smartly written, loaded with great dialogue and performances, this is an unusual ride from a major studio, earning six Academy Award nominations, including one for each of the female leads. If you’ve not seen this, get it on your list. It’s truly one of the most satisfying films of the past decade.
