On Netflix Now: ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’

Forgetting Sarah Marshall is a 2008 comedy about a guy who takes a Hawaiian vacation in order to deal with the recent break-up with his TV star girlfriend, little knowing, she’s in the same resort with her new boyfriend.

Sometimes an old formula with a new spice comes together in unexpected ways, and with Nicholas Stoller‘s Forgetting Sarah Marshall that is just what happens, a routine romcom on the surface that is anything but on the inside. Starring Jason Segel, who also wrote the screenplay, he plays Peter Bretter, a television drama composer who is dating the hot right now mega star Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell). He’s basically arm candy but one day, out of the blue, she lets him go and it pretty much ruins him. Looking to reset, he heads to an isolated resort in Hawaii, only to discover she’s also there with her new beau, rock star Aldous Snow (Russell Brand). Good thing there is kindly hotel concierge Rachel (Mila Kunis) in the middle to help him keep him distracted as he deals with his loss. While this is incredibly sharp with loads of genuine laughs, it is the in-your-face reality of a devastating breakup that really propels this forward with great performances from the entire cast. Still fresh ten years on, this is endlessly watchable and a must for Segel ad Bell fans.

THE LAST WORD

Spot on comedy hits all the right notes and few you don’t expect in a story full of great surprises. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll ‘rewind’ and watch it again.

It’s not you’re expected sugary romcom with all the predictable turns, but it’s nonetheless, very entertaining.
