On Netflix Now: ‘LA 92’

LA 92 is a 2017 documentary that reflects on the aftermath of several days of protests, violence and looting in Los Angeles after a controversial jury verdict.

For any of us who were alive in 1991, one of the most talked about moments of the year was the police beating of Rodney King, a highly disturbing video filmed by a bystander that sent shockwaves across the planet. A year later, when four of the Los Angeles police officers were put on trial for their actions, it seemed a clear-cut case leading to a quick conviction. However, that’s not what happened, and when they were acquitted and the public was still reeling over another act of violence against a young black girl, a match was tossed on a already volatile tinder box and a riot broke out that saw more than 60 people killed and thousands injured. This National Geographic documentary combines footage from a number of sources and lets the events unfold without narration, allowing the voices of those involved to tell the story, using a haunting synth score to build already near unbearable tension. Incredibly insightful and in-depth, putting us right in the streets and in the air above it, meeting the people who demanded better of their public service while others used it at opportunity to commit even more horrifying crimes. A truly jarring experience that is a must see.

THE LAST WORD

You’ve never seen these riots like this before, the filmmakers employing a remarkably personal in-your-face look into the this critical time in American history.

It’s an unflinching examination but has no narration to guide you, leaving you, as absolutely intended, to absorb and consider what you’re seeing on your own.
