On Netflix Now: ‘Life Itself’

Life Itself is a 2014 biographical documentary about the life and career of the renowned film critic and social commentator, Roger Ebert.

It’s not often enough that we recommend documentaries here, but we really should, and one that truly deserves a look, especially for any real film fan is this 2014 Steve James-directed biography of Roger Ebert. The film spends most of its time in the final months of Eberts life, cut short by cancer, a diagnosis and treatment he kept very transparent to his fans, taking to his already popular movie site and churning out a spectacularly moving blog where he invited us into his final journey. The film follows him though much of this, with many interviews with filmmakers and colleagues and with archival footage, plotting his rise in the industry where he became the most revered voice in film criticism, becoming the first of such writers to win a Pulitzer Prize. This is a deeply personal and enlightening experience that you won’t soon forget.

THE LAST WORD

A terrific look behind the scenes of truly one of the most important names in film criticism and his impact on cinema. Emotional and engaging as well as inspiring.

Just that he died too soon.
